MOLODIST Kyiv international film festival

Student films

Film Festival Molodist commenced its activity in 1970. It was a local festival in which participated young students of the cinematographic faculty of Kyiv National Institute of Theatre Arts named after Karpenko-Karyi. The annual festival competition has a student’s films section since that time.

Only films made by students of the Ukrainian cinematographic faculties took part in the competition program at first. But in 1974 Russian films participated in the festival for the first time. They were from the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography. In 1977 films from the Georgian Institute of Theatre Arts were presented at the festival for the first time.

So at the end of the 80th the festival was continuously changing into the international: all the best student films and debuts shown in USSR at that time were coming to Kyiv. Some student pictures from the European countries of the socialist block also found their way to Ukraine.

Competition program of the festival include films that were created by the competitors during their study. These are the films produced at professional studios or film schools. The length of the film must not be more than 45 minutes. Competition program of the festival include fiction, animation and documentary films.
