A meeting of the project’s Extra-curricular Activities Working Group was held on 4 November in Kyiv. The main aim of the meeting was to discuss the extra-curricular activities component, based on the inception report and terms of reference, and plan the work of the group for the next six months.

Participants in the meeting were: David Royle, International Team Leader; Polina Verbytska, National Expert for Extra-curricular Activities and Community Development ; Olga Kucher, teacher at School Number 22, Sevastopol; Lyudmila Nazarenko, Director of School Number 2, Tsyuryupinsk, Kherson; Olena Onats, Director of School Number 51, Kyiv and President of the Ukraine School Directors’ Association; Mark Shymanovski, Senior Research Assistant, Laboratory of Social Pedagogy, Institute of Upbringing Problems, Academy of Pedagogical Sciences, Kyiv; Volodymyr Urus’kyi, Deputy Director for Research at Ternopil Regional Teacher Training Institute; Alexander Vojtenko, teacher at School Number 2, Gadyach, Poltava.

The participants had been given a pre-meeting task to review the delivery and impact of civic education in their area of activity and reported on their findings and on how the extra-curricular activities component could support students, teachers and their communities.

Participants then discussed a framework for component activities based on 10 sub-themes within the overall theme of ‘Youth Acts’ and in relation to the civic competencies outlined in national educational policy documents. Members were allocated the task of preparing a brief paper on how each of the sub-themes could be developed in a sustainable way and linked to the development of students’ competencies.

Alexander Vojtenko was elected as working group chairman.

There will be further meetings in late November and/or December to draw up a timetabled plan of activities.
