1. Brief information about Cherkasy
Cherkasy is the regional centre that is situated 180 km away from the capital of Ukraine Kyiv. Its history is 700 years long. The city is situated on the Dnipro - river. There are about 290000 habitants in the city.
Cherkasy became the regional centre in 1954. It was built by an architect Gessen in the form of the squares 220x220 m. The width of the Dnipro near Cherkasy is 13 km.
2. Administration system
The municipality of the city is called City Council.
The mayor of the city is Serhiy Odarych since the 2006. The Deputy building is consists of 60 deputies that were elected according to the party lists. The city is divided into 2 regions and their role is limited.
3. Educational system
There are 27800 students (2007) aged form 6 to 18 years old that study in 42 schools (20 - regular schools, 8 - specialized, 3 gymnasiums , 1 collegium, 1 evening school, 4 private schools, 1 special, 2 orphanages).
Children by the age 0 - 6 years old study in the 53 establishments of the pre-school education. There are 4 establishments that were created for the out-of-school activities. There are more that 7 thousands of teachers that work in the city.
Schools specialized in Physics and Mathematics: Physics and Mathematics Lyceum, Specialized school # 17, Gymnasium # 9, Collegium "Berehynia".
Liberal Education Schools: gymnasium #31, specialized schools # 17, 28, 27, 33, Collegium "Berehynia", First City Gymnasium, Humanitarian Law Lyceum.
Economic School: Specialized school # 17, schools # 18, 13, Gymnasium # 31.
Ecological Schools: Schools # 3, 33.
Aesthetic School: School # 20.
There is City School Parliament, Parents Council, City Children Newspaper "SHOCK", School Euroclub Council.
Gymnasium # 1 and the Advanced School # 17 are the UNESCO Associated Schools.
There are 12 school newspapers that are edited in the schools, and the work of 10 web-cites is maintained. The Interact-club was created in the school # 17. Educational Administration controls the work of the educational system, and the Methodical Cabinet gives the methodical help. 40 % of the school principals are the members of the School Principals Association; the Teachers Association is in the developmental stage. The official language of education is: Ukrainian (37 schools) and Russian (3 schools).
English (95%), German, French, Spanish (5%) are studied as the foreign languages.
The Test System of Evaluation of Knowledge is introduced for the first time since the 2008. The new classes of inclusion education will be created in the 2008 too.
