Speaker asks factions to submit candidates for first deputy speaker, adjourns till Friday morning

Ukrainian parliamentary speaker Arseniy Yatsenyuk adjourned Parliament this evening with a call to the three factions which are not part of the parliamentary coalition to submit candidates for the post of first deputy speaker. He said that the majority is offering this post to the minority. He said he would give the minority time till tomorrow morning to hold talks and submit candidates. Yatsenyuk confirmed that Parliament would meet tomorrow morning at 10.00 local time.
 
Yanukovych says Party of Regions ready to work in opposition

Acting Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych has said that the Party of Regions is prepared to work in opposition. Speaking in an interview published today in a Ukrainian business daily, Yanukovych, who is the leader of the Party of Regions, said that the coalition formed by the Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defence bloc and Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc is destined to break up due to internal in-fighting and strong ideological differences. He added that his party will not be delegating its representatives to the Cabinet but is determined to ensure that it has all means to perform control functions in Parliament.
 
President pledges not to delay formation of government

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has pledged not to delay the formation of a new government and not to insist that Parliament should vote on legislative initiatives before it approves Yulia Tymoshenko as the new prime minister. Speaking at a joint press conference with Polish President Lech Kaczynski in Kyiv today, he said: "I state that there won't be a delay of even an hour on the part of the President's office in the formation of a new Ukrainian government. This is the path I am taking. Therefore, when I received a proposal to this effect from the parliamentary speaker (to nominate Yulia Tymoshenko as prime minister), I signed it this morning," Yushchenko said.

Speaker forwards coalition’s nomination of Yulia Tymoshenko to President

The speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, has said that he has formally forwarded the nomination of Yulia Tymoshenko as prime minister by the majority coalition to President Viktor Yushchenko.
Yatsenyuk made the announcement at the start of a Parliament meeting on the morning of December 6.
"In accordance with Article 83 of the Ukrainian Constitution and Article 64 of the regulations of the Ukrainian Parliament I, as parliamentary speaker, have forwarded the nomination of Yulia Tymoshenko for the post of Ukrainian prime minister to the President of Ukraine," Yatsenyuk said.

OUPSD to demand dismissal of top prosecutor

The Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defence faction is initiating the dismissal of Prosecutor-General Oleksandr Medvedko, the faction's representative, Taras Stetskiv, has said. Speaking in a report on private Ukrainian TV, Stetskiv said the faction has already started collecting signatures and will complete the procedure in the next few days. The stance of the factions making up the coalition, the Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defence bloc and the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc as to Medvedko's dismissal will be unanimous, he predicted. The People's Self-Defence is ready to put forward a new candidate for prosecutor-general to President Yushchenko, though Stetskiv did not disclose the name of the possible nominee.

Yanukovych unhappy with procedure in election of speaker

Acting Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych has described yesterday's election of parliamentary speaker as barrack democracy, private Ukrainian TV reported on December 5. The method of voting for Arseniy Yatsenyuk as speaker reflected the real state of affairs in the democratic coalition, Yanukovych said. The report showed him saying: “I believe that we should congratulate Mr Yatsenyuk on his election as parliamentary speaker… But I have to say that what we saw yesterday, that performance to elect the speaker, reflected the real state of affairs in the coalition. I believe this coalition was called democratic prematurely. The humiliating procedure to which 227 MPs were subjected yesterday - I don't know even how to describe it - I would say it was barrack democracy.”

New speaker hails his election as victory of new coalition

Addressing the Ukrainian Parliament shortly after his election on December 4, the new parliamentary speaker, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, said that his election proved that the coalition of the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc and the Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defence bloc is capable of effective work and that forming a new democratic cabinet would be the coalition's next move. Yatsenyuk also pledged to work closely with the opposition and said that every parliamentary faction would enjoy equal rights.

Acting Foreign Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk was elected the new parliamentary speaker in a secret ballot on the evening of December 4. His bid was supported by the votes of 227 MPs "in favour" in the 450-seat Parliament.
