What is the difference between WiFi and WiMAX?

There are four major differences between Wi-Fi and WiMAX:

  1. WiMAX covers in 30 times larger territory then Wi-Fi.
  2. WiMAX works in NLOS (non or near line-of-sight) areas.
  3. WiMAX allows implementation of the QoS (Quality of Service) policy.
  4. The WiMAX frequency range is licensed, which guarantees protection of data transmission and prevents unauthorized access.

Does bad weather and extensive precipitation influence the quality of Internet
  access?

The main advantage of the WiMAX over other radio technology is working at the same level of quality and without interference in any weather conditions.

Does the Alternet network allow Internet access using a lap-top computer with
Wi-Fi technology, without any additional equipment?

No, since WiMAX technology (802.16d standard) requires the use of specialized equipment developed specifically for the support of this standard. Currently, no lap-top computer has an internal modem with WiMAX standard support.

Will I have Internet access while moving around the city?

The Alternet network is based on 802.16d standard, also called fixed WiMAX standard. This standard provides a stable signal only for stationary objects. 802.16å standard - mobile WiMAX - provides Internet access to a constantly moving object, but the equipment for this standard is not being manufactured yet.

How can I check whether my address is included in the coverage area?

Firstly, have a look at the Alternet network coverage map. If your home or office is located within the network coverage area, send us an application for testing. This free service allows to check the signal quality at your address more precisely.
