Save all documents you receive and fill out going through customs - you will need these to leave the country. 'Red' corridors - for people carrying goods or cash that must be declared - any prohibited items - more than $1,000 and 85 hryvnyas in cash-personal jewelry whose value exceeds 500 hryvnyas-more than 1 litre of alcoholic beverages-more than 200 grams of tobacco products 'Green' corridors - for people who do not have any goods to declare. You may bring the following duty free: 85 hryvnyas or US$10,000 in cash or equivalent in other hard currency-goods for personal use-gifts and other goods worth up to $250 or a single item - up to $400 1 litters of liquor and 2 litters of wine, 200 grams of cigarettes, cigars or tobacco. NOTE: Anything exceeding these norms is subject to customs duties. Certain animals, plants, fruits and vegetables as well as high-frequency transmitters require appropriate permission from Ukrainian authorities. Leaving Ukraine You may take the following (customs duty free) 85 hryvnyas - $1,000 + currency obtained in Ukrainian bank (bank permission for export is required) currency and goods for personal use reported on entry in customs declaration gifts and other goods with the exception of prohibited items NOTE: Taking out art objects, medical equipment, animals and plants requires special permission from Ukrainian authorities. Etiquette When visiting Ukraine, there are a few simple rules of etiquette that may be useful: If invited into a family home, it is traditional to bring a gift. A bottle of wine, a cake or a bouquet of flowers is custo-mary. If there is a child in the house, it is appropriate to provide him/her with a small gift as well. If you bring flowers, make sure it is an uneven number of flowers. Even number is considered bad luck with exception to funerals Be prepared to remove your shoes upon entering a home. To keep apartments clean, most hosts will provide you with a pair of slippers. On public transportation, give up your seat to mothers with children, the elderly, or the infirm. At the entrance of upscale restaurants, expect that your coat, briefcase or baggage will be checked. When eating dinner at someone's home, casual dress is accepted. Be ready to give toasts at dinner, for guests are often asked to do so. Offer to share your snacks and cigarettes with those around you. Ukrainians are known for their generosity when it comes to feeding others. Turning down food may be considered rude. For business, dress should be conservative. Men should not take off their jackets unless asked. In Orthodox churches women wear scarves or hats, and men take off their hats. Important Do not shake hands across the thres-hold of a door. When shaking hands, take off your gloves. Be prepared to accept all food and drink offered you when visiting friends.
