«UkrAstro» Foundation

The philanthropic “UkrAstro” Foundation is a non-governmental philanthropic organization whose activity is aimed mainly at helping the people in Ukraine who are interested in the problems of astronomic science, conduct observations, construct astronomic equipment, as well as practice astronomy professionally and make efforts to popularize it.

Following are some of the Foundation’s priorities:

• Giving practical and consultation support to astronomy-lovers
• Organizing large-scale cultural and educational events of astronomic character
• Maintaining information exchange between astronomy-lovers in Ukraine and facilitating information exchange between astronomy-lovers in Ukraine and other countries
• Developing educational programs and supporting popular scientific publications and media

“UkrAstro” Foundation was founded in 2005, but its members and founders and their projects had been well-known both in Ukraine and abroad back since the end of the previous century. In early 1990s the amateur astronomic movement in Ukraine, along with other non-governmental and state institutions, had to survive some pretty hard times. In the beginning of 1999 the circumstances became more favorable for the revival of the amateur astronomic movement. Spring 1999 witnessed the Constituent Assembly of the Kharkov astronomic club “Asterion” was held», which brought together both the “old-timers” among the amateurs (including people from the circles of professional astronomers) and also some new members, whose number was constantly growing. The club’s main development objectives were to participate actively in the revival of the amateur astronomic movement in Kharkov and Ukraine and to re-create and perfect the information exchange between astronomy-lovers, including ensuring timely distribution of information on the latest news in astronomy, as well as coordinating joint observation projects. Since that time, the club members organized dozens of observation programs, and established contacts with astronomy-lovers in more than ten different countries.

In 2002 the astronomic club was reorganized into “Kharkov Astronomy-Lovers Society”. Owing to the efforts made by the members of the society, the annual large-scale meetings (forums) of astronomy-lovers have been held in Ukraine since 2002. The event has become a widely recognized brand among amateurs in Ukraine; it enjoys special attention of both local and national media. Over the period between 2002 and 2005 the society organized a number of observation programs, including the observation of Mercury and Venus passing across the Sun disc, and several joint programs with international organizations.
Taking into account the expanding scope of the activity of the Society and the special character of the events organized by its members, at the beginning of 2005 it was decided to reorganize the Society and create the philanthropic foundation “UkrAstro” with the headquarters in Kharkov.

For the purpose of retaining the club spirit it was also decided to revive Kharkov astronomic club “Asterion” as a place for non-formal meetings of astronomy-lovers of Kharkov region working with the support of the philanthropic foundation “UkrAstro”.
