About airport

The history of the airport Borispil

The history of civil aviation in Ukraine begins in 1923 when the ukrainian joint-stock company of air transport 'UKRVOZDUKHPUT' was set up in the city of Kharkiv.

In the pre-war period in Ukraine the leadership of enterprises and organizations of civil aviation was governed by the Ukrainian Administration of Civil Aviation which was under control the Main Board of Civil Aviation of the Soviet Union's Council of Ministers.

In 1952 in due to the restructuring of the system of the Soviet Union's civil aviation, the Department was renamed into Ukrainian Territorial Administration of Civil Aviation (according to the order of the Main Board of Civil Aviation dated from 16.08.1952 N 0207).

In 1964 the further restructuring led to a number of measures directed on the improvement of the functioning of the Soviet Union's civil aviation and the Main Board was reorganized into the Ministry of Civil Aviation of the Soviet Union.

The Presidium of Supreme Soviet issued an edict dated from 15.08.1966 to award the Ukrainian Administration of Civil Aviation an 'Orden Trudovogo Krasnogo Znamenyi' for successful results. From that time it was named the Ukrainian Orden Trudovogo Krasnogo Znameni Administration of Civil Aviation.

As the role of air transport in the main country system increased, in May 1959 the Council of Ministers of the USSR adopted a Decree about the creation of an air terminal of civil aviation 'Kyiv' (Central)on the base of Boryspil military aerodrome and obliged the Main Administration of Civil Aviation to provide it with modern aircrafts, landing equipment and radio engineering facilities.

On the 22 of June 1959 a Council of Ministers of Ukraine in its Decree N1832 in order to provide acceptance and handling of the reactive passenger airplane TY-104 in Kyiv obliged the Ukrainian Territorial Administration of Civil Aviation to ensure regular flights from the 1st of July 1959 to airport Boryspil with airplanes TY – 104 in routes Moscow – Kyiv – Moscow, Leningrad – Kyiv – Leningrad (from the 15 of August 1960).
The Ministries of Trade, Automobile Roads, Communication obligated with this Decree:

  • to supply the airport with 10 standard panelboard houses for accomodation of ground services and passengers;
  • passengers delivery to Kyiv and from Kyiv by busses;
  • to provide communication channels for air traffic control.

The first flight route Moscow – Kyiv – Moscow on the plane TY-104 was made by the Moscow crew on the 7 of July 1959. There were 100 passengers and 1600 kg of load on board.

Till November 1960 crews of Moscow, Leningrad and Georgian Administrations of Civil Aviation made the flights on the plane TY-104 in the airport Kyiv (Central).

Due to the order of the Head of the Main Administration of Civil Aviation under council of Ministers of USSR № 057 dated from 12.07.60 on the base of air squadron Antonov 10 an aviadetachment ISfe 208 with turbo project aircraft Tupolev 104 and Antonov 10 was organized joined with Boryspol airport.
The aviadetachment No 209 organized according to the typical standarts of personnel quantity established under the order of the Main Administration of Civil Aviation No 032-59

The first base airplane piloted by captain V. T. Garbara TY-104 landed in Boryspil on the 5 of November 1960.
The airport group exploited the airplanes TY-104 for 18 years. The last flight of the plane was from Boryspil to Symferopil in July 1977. For the period of TY-104 exploitation 18 million 233 thousand passengers were carried by it.
On the 27 of May 1959 the captain V. Kyryukhyn with his crew made a technical flight route Kyiv – Moscow – Tbilisi – Kharkiv – Adier – Kharkiv – Kyiv on the plane AN-10.

First-class engineer-pilot Mr. Smilyansky, ex-chief of Boryspil Aviation enterprise was the first to master new TU-154 plane.

The first passenger flight of TU-154 plane was made on August 15, 1974 under guidance of captain Mr. Levchuk .

On May 20, 1965 new Boryspil Air Terminal was put into operation. Air traffic is the youngest, the most perfect and perspective, therefore it was clear that the architects, builders, engineers and artists tried to reflect these design features of new Boryspil Air Terminal, the first-rate at that time in our country to Vnukovo Air Terminal and unigue according to its architectural decisions.

Convenient and comfortable Boryspil Air Terminal is fitted with modern equipment, and is able to provide different services for passengers. Air Terminal Complex met modern reguirements according to constructional decisions.

Provision of airfields for categories 1 and 2 aircraft landing started in Ukraine in 1979. Boryspil Airport was equiped for category 1 automatic aircraft landing. Development of Air Traffic Control automatic systems which change Air Traffic controllers and air crews work radically and increase flights security and regularity started at the same time on the base of modern electronic computerized technique.

In March, 1979 Boryspil Airport, the first in the Soviet Union received the Certificate giving the right to perform IKAO category 2 aircraft landing. Sometimes Boryspil Airport is called as the proving ground of civil aviation. Modern Landing System was installed here for the first time in Aeroflot.
On February 9, 1971 Presidium of Supreme Soviet of the USSR awarded Boryspil Aviation Enterprise with Order of Zhovtnevoyi Revolutsiyi for great achievements during fulfilment of five-year plan on Air Traffic transportation, mastering and application of new air technique.

On March 31, 1993 Ministry of Transport has taken the decision regarding division of Boryspil Aviation Enterprise into Boryspil Airport, Ukrainian Airlines and Air Traffic Control. Since April 1, 1993 Boryspil International Airport became independent enterprise in the independent Ukraine.
Due to the Decree of Ministry of Transport of Ukraine dated from March 11, 1993 "The reorganizanion of Boryspil aviaenterprise on the base of Boryspil aviaenterprise a State International Boryspil airport and Regional Board of aircompany "Airlines of Ukraine" were created on April 1, 1993..
