”крањнський луб —тудентського ќбм≥ну Ukrainian Student Exchange Club Home [index.htm] Up Julia Ladygina, participant ICCP 1998,2000: If it is going to be your first time in the USA, natural, that you would have lot's of hesitations, fears, prejudices and, of course, many sleepless nights before your journey. My first advise - forget about all the stories about gangsters, maniacs and other perverted guys you've seen in the movies, read or heard from others. Of course, as in any other country, there are kind and nasty people in the USA, but most of the Americans are very nice: sensitive, communicative, open-minded, ready to help, always smiling and very religious. Do not listen to those, who calls Americans stupid and limited creatures, that think only about juicy slices of pizza. Well, you might meet some people who've never heard about Ukraine or who cannot distinguish a birch from an oak tree, but it does not mean anything. This people are very greedy for knowledge, eager to hear something new & exciting especially kids. They would make you millions questions, and if you are a great stories-maker, you would have success. I bet, everyone has seen "Home Alone" and "Trouble Kid"Е Do not get scared - not all the USA kids are that crazy and mean. If you had any experience with Ukrainian children, you would be fine in the USA. Kids are pretty much the same no matter on which side of the world they live. Trouble kids are everywhere. But if you are active, enthusiastic, talkative, ready to share their adventures and can teach them something interesting or funny (it can be whatever starting from playing the guitar and up to the making flips under the water), you would not get in trouble. If you are a good team worker, cheerful and and can go a bit crazy, you would never have any problems with American campers and stuff members. But do not wait until someone comes up and says hello to you. It can lasts quite a long time. If you want to make a lot of new friends from allover the world, do not be gloomy and passive!!!!! Be initiative, creative, communicative, funny and ready to help. Do not be ashamed of your language and accent! Be natural and do not get upset cause you sounds different of some one asked you to repeat your phrase couple of times. Tears would not help. Better try your best and use the time in the camp to improve your English. Let's come back to the juicy slices of pizza :). The first couple of weeks you would feel like a child in a candy store. So many new delicious dishes!!! And what is the most dangerous - you can get as much food as you what. Why dangerous? The food has uncountable amount of calories. It's O.K. for kids but you are risking to put on at least 10 kilos. So, if you want to come back in a good shape - be alert and watch what you put in your mouth and take an active part in all sport active games. Be real while packing your suitcases. You are going to spend at least 9 weeks somewhere up in the maintains or deep in a wood. Be prepared to live in a tent. Warm wool sweet short, bug spray and a pair of comfortable shoes would be very useful! The work at the camp is rather hard and exhausting. Homesick after the first week is guaranteed. You would have lot's of tight and uncomfortable situation, but from my own experience I can stand, that the summer in the USA would be the best adventure in your life. You would have great time, you would ever be able to forget. And who knows, you might meet someone, you would love to share the life with as my elder sister did. Everything depends only on you. There would be no mom & dad to help. You might be the only one Russian-speaker in the camp. Challenging but it's worthЕ Good luck and lots of fun! Enjoy! Julia Ladygina, participant ICCP 1998,2000.
