[index.php] Ukrainian Holidays There are many holidays in Ukraine. The biggest Ukrainian holiday is the New Year’s Day (1 January). During the Soviet time people were not allowed to celebrate Christmas (our Christmas is 7 January) and the New Year’s Day was the most cheerful holiday. We celebrate Christmas twice – Catholic and Orthodox, but the latter one is more important and it is an official day off. The next holiday is the Old New Year (14 January). On 14 February we celebrate St. Valentine’s Day. This is the day of all lovers. Women’s day is 8 March. On this day men give women flowers and gifts. Men are also supposed to do all the housework, this is pretty nice – at least once a year women can have some rest and forget about cooking, kids, take a magazine and relax on the sofa… 1 April is nonofficial The April Fools’ Day. People say jokes to each other, newspapers and TV publish funny stories and jokes. The motto of this day is: “Do not trust anybody on 1 April!” Easter is celebrated on the last Sunday of April. Catholic Easter is celebrated a week earlier. Early in the morning people go to the church and consecrate holiday food stuff: sausage, butter, cottage, cheese, Easter eggs and Easter cakes. The Easter egg is by far the most popular emblem of Easter. 1 May is the May’s Day. During Soviet time there were huge demonstrations on this day, as everybody was obliged to show his/her loyalty to the state. Now this is a good chance to make picnics and have a good rest. Also it’s an official day off. 9 May is a great day, called the Victory Day. This holiday commemorates victory over fascist in the World War II. 28 June is the Day of the Constitution of Ukraine. It’s a state holiday and an official day off. On the day people usually go to picnics. 24 August is the Independence Day. It’s an official holiday in Ukraine. 1 September is the Day of Knowledge. It’s the beginning of a school year. Children go to the schools with flowers for their teachers. There are nice and exciting meetings before the classes start. Ukrainians love to celebrate.
