Zaporozhye Travel Guides

Zaporozhye or Zaporizhia (Uk. Запоріжжя, Ru. Запорожье) is a city in south-eastern Ukraine situated on both banks of the Dnieper River (see map). With approximately 820,000 inhabitants, it is an important industrial center that serves as a rail junction and transshipment port for goods produced in the Donets Basin. Zaporozhye is home to a major steel industry, a large hydroelectric power plant (Dnieproges), the country's largest auto manufacturer (ZAZ), and a world renowned manufacturer of airplane engines (Motor-Sitch).

The city has a proud history due to its association with an autonomous Cossack stronghold of the 16th to 18th centuries. Called the Zaporizhian Sich, it was an impregnable fortress (sich) on the nearby Khortitsa Island. The site of the former fortress can still be visited today and is a proud reminder of Cossack society and the long Ukrainian struggle for self-determination.

The present day city was founded as a Russian fortress in 1770. Originally known as Aleksandrovsk, the city saw rapid industrialization at the end of the 20th century and further growth with the construction of the hydroelectric station (1928-1932).

Such growth has also facilitated Zaporozhye's development as a major educational center. The city is home to the Zaporizhia State University, plus numerous technical institutes, research facilities, and medical schools. Today it is said that one in every four residents is either a student or a scholar.
