All Rights Reserved. PBase History PBase was conceived in July of 1999 after observing countless camera wielding people that take cool photos but find it difficult to share their work. It was up and running by August,1999 at photobase.org with basic features. I soon realized that this was definitely not a novel idea but here's my version anyway. The primary mission of PBase is to be the best place on the web to display photos. -slug PBase Hardware Server Photos PBase originally ran on jomo, a dual Intel Pentium II 350Mhz machine with 768MB Ram - It is still running as the mail server, dns server, and my desktop machine. 26-May-2001 - junga - Dual Intel PIII 1Ghz machine, 1GB RAM, and a U160 SCSI RAID - replaced jomo. originally this did everything, database, webserver and storage. then moved the storage to jaro and eventually retired when replaced by jogo and ji. Nov-2001 - jaro - Add a SuperMicro 6010H dual 1Ghz server with 4GB ram - originally image server, now it does DNS and the forums 08-Mar-2002 - jogo - Dell PE2550, dual 1.4Ghz p3, 4GB ram. originally database server. replaced by jack. now image server. 08-Mar-2002 - ji - Dell PE1550 dual 1.26Ghz p3, 4GB ram - web server. was the primary nfs server. replaced mostly by jiki. now main upload server. 20-Mar-2002 - jala - Dell PE1650 dual 1.26Ghz p3, 2GB ram - secondary storage server and dev machine 15-Aug-2002 - jama,jenki,jinko - Three Dell PE1650s dual 1.4Ghz p3, 2GB ram, and a Cisco Local Director 416 load balancer - web server cluster 01-Feb-2003 - jack - Dell PE4600, dual 2.8Ghz Xeon, 10GB RAM, 8x36GB raid 10 - replaced by jill as the primary database server - now a standby database server and development environment 06-Mar-2003 - jiki - Dell PE2650, dual 2.8Ghz Xeon, 3GB RAM - dedicated NFS server 27-Jul-2003 - jobi - Dell PE1750, dual 2.4Ghz Xeon, 4GB RAM - added to web server cluster 23-Aug-2003 - jill - Dell PE6650, quad 2.0Ghz Xeon MP, 16GB RAM, 28x18GB 15krpm raid 10 - database server 08-Oct-2003 - jilik - Dell PE2650, dual 2.8Ghz Xeon, 3GB RAM - NFS server attached to two Dell PV220S disk arrays each with 14x146GB disks 08-Jan-2004 - judy - Dell PE1750, dual 2.8Ghz Xeon, 4GB RAM - web server cluster 01-Apr-2004 - jello - Dell PE1750, dual 2.8Ghz Xeon, 4GB RAM - replaces jaro as forum server and miscellaneous other jobs. 01-Apr-2004 - joop - Dell PE1750, secondary storage mirror server, connected to fiber channel disk arrays. 07-Jun-2004 - jojo - Dell PE1750, miscellaneous jobs and R+D server There are also other machines ranging from 1Ghz PIII to 2.0Ghz P4 CPUs, and ten Dell dual 2.0Ghz Xeons that are dedicated to serving nothing but thumbnails. Each of them serve about 3million thumbnail images per day. Tape backup done with a Dell PV110T LTO-2 tape drive. Oct-2003- PBase is now using about 16 terabytes of live storage. PBase Software The operating system is Linux . Red Hat distribution. The web server is Apache using mod_perl The site is programmed using Perl using many modules from CPAN Development environment: a bunch of xterms and vi Image processing done with ImageMagick Code management by CVS EXIF data extraction was done using exifdump.py written by Thierry Bousch Now done with a program called jhead written in C by Matthias Wandel.
