I think that we can't live without them. We learned a lot of interesting things from books. I am sure that books play a very important role in our life. Thanks to book we can talk to people who lived in different ages and countries. Book develops our feelings and emotions, it makes us think, suffer and rejoice together with the characters of the book. It's also a source of knowledge and useful information about all sorts of things. Books are divided into 2 major categories: fiction and non-fiction. Books of fiction are imaginary stories. The writer makes us the characters and events. Sometimes a writer bases on real events. There are following kinds of fiction: tales, myths, legends, poetry, plays and novels. Non-fiction books are about real events, people or nature. They give factual material about history, nature. As for me I like detectives and fantastic stories. My favorite detective story is "The adventures of Sherlock Holmes" by A.C.Doyle. I like it because when you read it you will never know till the last page who is the murderer and it's very interesting. Also I like "The lord of the ring" by J.J.R.Tolkien. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Books People get a kick out of doing most extraordinary things. I can't say that I am really mad about this or that kind of leisure activity. But if I were asked about my or our family hobby I would name reading. In modern society books became overshadowed by cinema, TV, video as entertainment , & by computers as a source of information. Of course, computers offer a much more perfect & economical way of storing & retrieving data. But the artistic value of books is undeniable. Only by reading can a person learn to think, to feel, to behave as a human being. I enjoy reading all kinds of books- historical novels, travelogues, biographies, novels, science fiction, detective stories, poetry, etc. If I were to name my favourite genre or writer, it would be hard for me to do, but in American literature I would single out M. Mitchel. Her novel Gone with the wind- is so human, so touching, informative, touching & poetic. In fact, it's one of the greatest books about love. Someone said that reading to the mind is what exercise to the body. Books can't be replaced by all the mass media in the world. So, I switch off TV, radio, my computer & open a book. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Books in my life. A book is one of the greatest wonders of the world. Why are so many people fond of reading? The world of books is full of wonders. Together with the characters of different stories you can find yourself in different countries, have a lot of adventures. The book is a faithful friend. They form our values and characters. We try to look like the characters of your favourite books: to be brave, honest, not to be silly and greedy, to be real friends. We enjoyed the beauty and wisdom of fairy-tales and fables when we were babies and Granny read them. They taught us to be kind, clever, hardworking, to understand other people and help them. They teach us to understand the beauty of nature, take care of it, to love our motherland. Books have been with us since childhood. Who hasn't read "Alice in the wonderland", "Mowgli"? Who hasn't traveled with Marry Poppins to her imaginary world? Who hasn't imagined himself to be Robinson Crusoe on the deserted island? I have read a lot of interesting books, but my favourite book is "The adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain. This well-known book is popular with the children all over the world. The main character of the book is Tom Sawyer, who lived in a small town on the Mississippi River. He was a boy with a wild imagination. He and his friends often dreamed of different adventures. Tom was naughty, kind and brave. Besides he was noble. I like this boy because he teaches us to be true friends. If you are not fond of reading, take a book to your liking or borrow it from the library and read it. Books are worth reading. They are our good friends. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Books in our life. Despite the increase in TV watching and the developing of World Wide Web, reading is still very important. So I don't think books need to be rescued. Reading both entertains and educates people. Books help us to discover new things and explore new ideas. A book is one of the greatest wonders in the world. It gives a unique chance to link up with authors who lived hundreds and thousands years ago. Thanks to books we can talk to people who lived in different ages and countries. Through reading books we hear their voices, thoughts and feelings. Books can tell us a lot about arts and fashion. From them we can learn about the rest of the world. The book is the surest way to bring nations together. It gives us an insight not only into the past, but also into the future. The book is a faithful and undemanding friend: it can be put aside and taken up again at any moment. Reading is the perfect way to relax and spend your free time. Books portray life in its richness, so they develop reader's imagination and arouse curiosity, admiration. Sometimes they even can help to solve difficult problems of life. I become very keen on literature early in life. This probably happened because we had a very good and widely read library in home. Books stirred my imagination, expanded the boundaries of the familiar world and filled my life with great expectations of joy and happiness. Since childhood I have been enchanted by A. Volkov and his "Magician of the Emerald City" and its sequels. I also was delighted with Pushkin's fairytales. Later my heart was won by Chehov, Russian writer, and J. Ronie, French author who wrote a lot of adventure novels about ancient times. Luckily this world is rich in remarkable authors. I'm fond of reading and I've read a lot of books of different genres. And certainly I have my favorite book. It is the story by Agatha Christie - "The murder of Roger Ackroyd". Agatha Christie was born in 1890. She is the famous English detective writer, and almost everyone knows her as creator of Miss Marple and Hercules Poirot. This book was written in 1926. Some critics say that Agatha Christie introduced a novelty in this work, because the murder is a storyteller. In the "The murder of Roger Ackroyd" the main characters and environment are typical for 1920th in England. The action takes place in a country house. The authors shows us it's owner with his habits, relatives and neighbors. All this is presented vividly and brightly. One of the main heroes of the book Hercules Poirot gets over a lot of problems before catching a murder. Excitement, suspense, horror, revenge, and extraordinary talent, astounding calmness of Hercules Poirot fill this book. "The murder of Roger Ackroyd" has made a great impression on me. And nowadays it makes really unforgettable impressive reading. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested. This quotation belongs to a famous English philosopher Francis Bacon (1561 - 1626). He himself expands on it further: "that is, some books are to be read only in Parts; others to be read but not Curiously; and some few to be read wholly, and with Diligence and Attention." One can't but admire the exactness and universal wisdom of the idea. In fact it is a hundred percent true. Actually long before the invention of printing people valued books as precious treasure troves of the human knowledge and experience. Hard-written manuscripts took months of writing and were collected and kept in monasteries with utmost care. A rough calculation shows that nowadays there are more books on our planet than men alive. Most of them originated as written records of historical events. Then they began reflecting not only intellectual, but also moral experience of their creators. As science progressed books began to involve observations, conclusions and theoretical thinking. The books of today reflect such a large scope of information that it's practically impossible to mention all types of them. Approximately we can define different kinds of books as fiction and non-fiction, science-fiction; biographies, books about political, social and economic subjects; travel books; romances; thrillers, adventure and love stories, detective stories; fairy tales and fantasies; ghost stories and mysteries, animal stories and family stories. But lets go back to our quotation. To my mind all books are to be tasted. A modern, well-educated person should be able to use not only textbooks, but reference books, dictionaries, encyclopedias, vocabularies and all sorts of informational publications. These books serve the purpose of learning, teaching and instructing. In fact you have to taste all other books as well to know what suits your personal interests and inclinations. If a book has got a gripping plot and takes in religious fanatics, bear attacks, resurrected lovers and obsessions we can read it in a gulp. A well-written novel usually mixes adventure and romance with great flair. Everybody likes books where fictional characters are loosely based on real Beverly Hills people. Some of my friends are hooked on tales where Cinderella meets a megastar, usually a womanizer, who falls for her. Sometimes a villain or a villainess comes into her happiness. Murder and mayhem follow. Such improbable tale is just the thing for a lazy holiday reading. Most of mysteries and horror books are called escapist books. They take you away from every day problems into the land of witchcraft, spooks, ghosts and miracles. Some of them are highly enjoyable nail-biters with fast-paced plot and a hero that verges on a superhero. As a rule people seldom reread a detective story or a fast-moving thriller that's full of intrigue. I admit that it may be highly entertaining, but hence the investigation is over and the criminal is found you sign with relief and forget it. These are the books to be swallowed. However, there is another type of books that is to be chewed and digested. These are the works by brilliant minds of mankind. Most of them have great one liners like "all families are happy in the same way" in Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina" or "Bolivar can't carry both" from O'Henry. One needs certain intelligence and experience, persistence and perseverance to digest them. Pretty often our comprehension of the plot and messages of these literary works changes as we grow up. One really must be in love to understand Tatiana from "Eugenie Onegin". Sometimes a scholar has "to chew" (to study) some additional literature or autobiographical books to understand the author's motivations or even consult the critics , who will help him understand the meaning of exquisite metaphors, epithets or tricky connotations. Very often it is not needed. We can't but admire how brilliantly Walter Scott captures the splendor and the savagery of mediaeval times, making his novels a superb, exciting reading. A talented writer can plot tautly without losing descriptive quality, which adds to the entertainment. The reader then finds himself plunged into a new life and a strange land. S. Maugham used to say that a real masterpiece makes you share the feelings and emotions of the people who used to live hundreds of yeas ago, thousands miles away. In conclusion I'd like to prolong Francis Bacon's quotation and advise the readers to eat as many books as possible, no matter whether you have to swallow, chew or digest them. The only thing he has to remember is that the happy eater never becomes a gourmet. Украинская Баннерная Сеть
