[main_eng.php] Search: General Facts The National Writers’ Union of Ukraine is a voluntary social-creative association of professional writers—poets, prosaists, playwrights, critics, and translators. The NSPU was founded during the first Congress of Ukrainian writers in 1934 as a constituent part of the Writers` Union of the former USSR. The First Congress of the post-communist Writers` Union took place in April 1991, at which time it declared its independence from any existing Soviet structures. In compliance with the law “On Authors and Creative Associations,” which was passed in 1998, the Writers’ Union of Ukraine became formally known as the National Writers’ Union of Ukraine. The supreme body of the NSPU is the Congress of Ukrainian writers, which is convened once every five years. Between congresses, the managing bodies are the Council and Presidium of the NSPU. Executive functions are delegated to the Secretariat. The head of the National Writers’ Union of Ukraine is the celebrated writer Volodymyr Yavorivsky. Today the NSPU has over 1,800 members, including 84 writers living abroad. The majority of NSPU members write in the Ukrainian language, while others write in Russian, Moldavian, Yiddish, Hungarian, Greek, etc. Regional organizations of the National Writers’ Union are located in every oblast centre of Ukraine, as well as in several other large cities. In order to record achievements in the literary field, the NSPU awards prizes to authors. The principal ones are the Lesia Ukrainka Prize, the Ivan Franko Prize, the Pavlo Tychyna Prize, the Maxym Rylsky Prize, “Blahovist” (Church Bells), and others. Historical Background The history of our writers’ association spans almost seventy years. During the period of Stalinist totalitarian rule more than 500 Ukrainian writers were repressed, most of whom were imprisoned or executed. During the Second World War 173 writers fought in the ranks of the Soviet Army, partisan detachments, and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army [Ukrainska Povstanska Armiia—UPA]. Others worked in publishing houses and the editorial offices of newspapers and magazines. The Second World War claimed the lives of 39 members of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine. A significant number of Ukrainian writers were persecuted by the Soviet regime after the dismantling of Stalin’s personality cult. Among them were Vasyl Stus, Ivan Svitlychny, Valerii Marchenko, and Mykola Rudenko. During the years of struggle for the independence of Ukraine the National Writers’ Union became the focal point of these efforts. Such well known national-liberation and political organizations as Rukh, Prosvita, and Memorial were founded within the Ukrainian writers’ milieu.
