EFSI Severski Donets

Severski Donets is one of the largest inflows of Don River. Its length is 1053 kms, within the limits of Ukraine - 723 kms (68 % of the general length) and 335 kms within the limits of Russia (32 % from the general length). The general area of a river basin makes 98,9 thousand km2, 55 % of them on territory of Ukraine and 45 % in Russia. There are more than 3100 rivers in the basin of Severski Donets with the general length of more than 21 thousand km. Average density of a river network is equal 0,21 kms / km2. Siverskyi Donets is a sole water¬way of Kharkiv Region, which gives drink water to the scores of cities and villages, including a capital of Slobozhanshehyna, Kharkiv. The river originates in Belgorod Region in Russia, flows further through Kharkivshchyna, Donechchyna, Luganshchyna, and then into the Don in the Rostov Region, again in Russia. An accident at the wastewater treatment plant in Kharkiv, which happened in summer 1995, made it necessary to grasp the gravity of problems concerned with Donets. Professor Sergiy Piligramm, a deputy director general on science of "Kharkivkomunochystvod" enterprise, deals with problems of Sivertskyi Donets sanitation for the whole life. Therefore the leading Kharkiv scientists, with the direct assistance of professor Piligramm, prepared in 1997 a first ver¬sion of investment project named "Ecological sanitation of a basin of the Sivertskyi Donets river and improve¬ment of drinking water quality". In February 2001 in the course of Foreign Ministers of Russian Federation and Ukraine meeting with the heads of administration of five boundary regions a Memorandum on co-operation in pro¬tection and using of Sivertskyi Donets basin water source was signed.
