The Kherson Civic Orchestra Humanitarian Aid Project The Institute aims to serve three constituencies: 1. Americans, who are interested in learning about Ukraine on educational, business, and cultural levels 2. Citizens of Ukraine, who are interested in building democratic structures in Ukraine and who wish to develop relationships with Americans. 3. Ukrainian immigrants recently arrived from Ukraine The Institute is developing three programs to serve these constituencies: The Ukrainian Immigrant Training Program …will provide a hands-on practical training experience for Ukrainians living in the USA. Program participants will learn how to function in American work setting by performing various tasks vital to the operations of the Institute. The participants’ input will be solicited continuously in order to keep the program responsive to the needs of the immigrant community. “New Ukrainian Immigrants to Pittsburgh: Welcome Packet”—Near Completion! English as a Second Language Classes The Eye on Ukraine Program …is modeled after the successful US Embassy program “Window on America”. It will consist of a contemporary resources database, which contains computer lists of Ukrainian web sites, on-line periodicals, written materials, and organizations housing such information. It also will encompass a lecture series for students, business people, and others interested in Ukrainian topics. Chat rooms to maintain and broaden contacts is also part of this program. The program will sponsor a film series. A list-serv will link Institute constituents to these resources and informs them of current events. The Institute has forged partnerships with community organizations such as the Center for Russian and East European Studies at the University of Pittsburgh to coordinate efforts with students from Ukraine studying at local universities. Other potential venues include The Outreach: Ukraine Program …will focus on developing strategies for working with alumni of the US State Department’s Community Connections Program and participants of training programs at universities and other institutions, which work with Ukraine. The guiding principle for this project will be capitalizing upon the contacts and progress made through government and foundation-sponsored programs and encouraging cross-organizational cooperation.
