Curriculum Guidance

The outline curriculum of teaching and learning points includes several sections. At each grade:

Teaching Points and Learning Outcomes:

The teaching pints and learning outcomes include the following topics:

  • my growth and development - physiological, social, emotional
  • how my body works
  • how I can look after my own health and needs - physiological, social, emotional
  • sex and sexuality
  • substances, their use and their misuse
  • safety
  • asking for information, advice, support and help
  • my relationships
  • my behaviour

Taken together, these topics are intended to promote and encourage the development of young people's autonomy; their realisation of their interdependence; and their ability to live and act alongside others.

The 'curriculum' represented here is intended to be educational and developmental.

Teaching Points:

The teaching will include coverage of three aspects of leaning:

1. Knowledge

This aspect of learning is about facts and information, things that young people know. It can be defined or described in such language as:

  • I know...
  • I understand...
  • I have learnt...
  • I have been told...

2. Skills

This aspect of learning is about abilities and competences, things that young people can do. It can be defined or described in such language as:

  • I can...
  • I am able to...
  • I feel confident that...

3. Attitudes

This aspect of learning is about beliefs and understandings. It reflects an awareness of the wider community, ways of living and behaving, and the variety of experiences and life-styles which exist in addition to those of the individual young person. It is attitudes which have the greatest impact on behaviour. This aspect of learning can be defined or described in such language as:

  • I believe...
  • I feel...
  • I am aware that...
  • It is my opinion that...

Teachers will need a clear understanding of what to include in their teaching for each age, year group and grade; and why - what lesson content to achieve which learning outcomes.

Messages.

It might be useful to link teaching with 'messages' to emphasise the skills and attitudes learning points. The relevant messages for sex and drug education include:

Health: What will be the effects and consequences for my body and my mental/emotional health of particular behaviours. (Content: knowledge)

Social: What will be the effects and consequences for my social health of particular behaviours. (Social health means the quality of relationship between self and others - family, friends, school mates, teachers, peers, employers.) (Content: skills, attitudes.)

Legal/Civil: What are the legal and civil consequences of particular behaviours. A behaviour may not have negative health or social consequences, but because it is illegal it can have negative consequences through the court and legal systems. (Content: skills, attitudes.)

Moral: What will be the consequences of particular behaviours on the way I think of myself and my actions; and the way other people think of me and my actions. (Content: attitudes.)

Resources: Some printed materials are available in Ukrainian (and Russian) which can assist teachers and schools in their Safety Skills class-room work on sex and drug education.

Student Awareness: There will be a variety of awareness and understanding about sex and sexuality and substance use amongst pupils and students. No class or teaching group will be entirely homogenous. The knowledge and awareness some pupils and students already posses may come from a variety of sources, including (but not only) personal experience. The golden rules are:

  • make no assumptions
  • involve every child or young person in lessons and discussion

The variety of awareness and understanding might include young people who can say:

  1. I don't know what all this is about
  2. I understand that some people behave like this
  3. I am beginning to meet people who behave like this
  4. I know people who behave like this
  5. I behave like this
