Reproductive Genetics Institute: ABOUT US Reproductive Genetics Institute (RGI) is one of the advanced and reputable medical institutions in the world in providing high quality services for infertility problems and genetic disorders. At the present time PGD can be performed, in principle, for any genetic condition for which there is sufficient sequence information. Based on this information, special primers or chromosome specific probes may be developed for accurate selection of mutation free oocytes and embryos to ensure the establishment of an unaffected pregnancy. Because PGD provides a very valuable option for genetically disadvantaged people to control the outcome of their reproduction from the very outset, PGD has been currently applied all over the world. As many as 40 PGD centres have been established in 17 countries, including the USA, UK, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Australia, Israel, Russia, Netherlands, South Korea, Sweden, Colombia, Cyprus, Finland, Greece, Turkey and Brazil. By this time, these centres performed approximately 3,000 clinical cycles, resulting in more than 500 pregnancies (over 20% pregnancy rate), and the birth of nearly 300 healthy children. More than two thirds of these clinical cycles were performed in USA, from which the largest number (1,200 cycles) was contributed by RGI, which is more than half of the world experience. This resulted in 250 pregnancies and birth of approximately 200 healthy children. The list of conditions for which PGD was performed is being extended rapidly, and listed in PGD section. Scientists at RGI are extensively involved in basic research in reproductive genetics, experimental embryology, and cell genetics. One of the latest RGI's developments made it possible to introduce the technique for the full karyotyping of the second PB and individual human blastomeres using the modern techniques of nuclear transfer. This provided the possibility for application of PGD for couples with translocations who have extremely poor chances for having a healthy child. Three dozens of cycles have already been performed for maternally and paternally derived translocations, using this new karyotyping technique. RGI's research activities are fully integrated into assisted reproduction and clinical genetics practices, making the most recent advances in basic and applied research available to families with infertility and those at risk for having a child with a congenital disease.
