Nebulizer therapy is a type of inhalation therapy. It uses special devices — nebulizers (Latin for “cloud”, first used in 1874 to describe a “tool that turns a liquid substance into an aerosol for medical purposes”).
Compressor nebulizers (air is supplied to the spray chamber by compressor) are reliable and easy to use; they do not affect heat-sensitive (hormonal) preparations and drugs containing complex molecular fractions. Therefore, compressor nebulization is considered to be the “gold standard” of inhalation therapy.
The main advantages are:
- High concentration of drug in the lungs, reduction of the total dose of drug and, consequently, reduction of systemic drug effect;
- Absence of drug biotransformation (binding to blood proteins, modifications in the liver, etc.) prior to onset of action;
