Short description: intravenous zidovudine, intended for HIV-positive women in labour and new-borns for prevention of transplacental transmission of the virus from mother to foetus.
Analysis of administration of intravenous zidovudine in 11,538 women showed that, despite the large number of oral antiretroviral forms and antiretroviral therapy during pregnancy, administration of intravenous zidovudine during labour in case of virological failure or presence of obstetric risk factors is still an effective means of preventing HIV transmission from mother to foetus.
