FAQ

My Arrival, My Stay, and My Family
Do I have to do all administrative procedures myself?

No, you can empower a law firm or specialized agency to complete all the formalities connected with obtaining a residence permit and registering your address.

I just arrived/entered Ukraine with cash. What should I do?

If you plan to deposit part of this money into a bank account, you must declare this money to the customs service. They will provide you with a Declaration of Personal Goods that you must present during your first deposit.

I have a work permit and a temporary residence permit. Can my wife and my children stay with me in Ukraine?

Your wife can stay in Ukraine without a visa and residence permit for 90 days over a period of 180 days. For a longer stay, a residence permit is required. Once you receive your temporary residence permit, your wife and children can receive a temporary residence permit. Proof of family ties is required (marriage certificate or birth certificate with apostille accompanied by a notarized translation) and proof of sufficient financial resources (usually, a statement given to a notary certifying that you support your family). Your wife must also obtain Visa D.

Legalization of Stay
I have a Visa C for one year, and I have already been in Ukraine for two months. How long more can I stay in Ukraine?

The total duration of your authorized stay is 90 days over a period of 180 days from the date of your first entry into Ukraine. To remain in Ukraine beyond 90 days, you should submit a request to the Migration Service for an extension of your stay.

I have a work permit for a period of one year. What is the duration of my authorized stay in Ukraine?

The temporary residence permit is issued for the period corresponding with the duration of your work permit (in general, for a maximum of one year). Once your work permit is renewed, you must apply for a renewal of your residence permit.

The work permit can be renewed without any particular limitations on the number of renewals. However, the renewal request must be made by the company no later than one month before the expiry of your work permit.

Do I have to apply for Visa D each time my work permit is renewed?

No, if you apply for your renewal of residence permit on time. The law states that the application for a renewal of residence permits must be made within 15 days before the expiration date of your temporary residence permit. Otherwise, you should go to the consulate of Ukraine to request a new visa.

My Banking Services
I am a BNP Paribas client in another country. Is this significant?

Yes, the advantages are outlined on the last page of the guide inside the cover.

I am a foreigner in Ukraine, but I don’t earn a salary. Can I use banking services (savings products, credit cards, safety deposit boxes)?

Yes, but you won’t be able to deposit funds on your accounts. So, if you have daily banking needs, the best solution for you would be to open an All Inclusive package and transfer funds from abroad. Then you can exchange funds into UAH and budget for your needs in Ukraine.

Accounts Operations
Can my spouse use my banking account?

In theory, it is possible with a notarized power of attorney. But the procedures are quite complicated. We would advise you to order an additional card for your spouse’s daily use.

Where can I use my cards in UAH, EUR, or USD?

In Ukraine as well as abroad. However, at ATMs you can only withdraw cash in the local currency (UAH in Ukraine, EUR in France, etc.).

My Salary, Income, and Savings
What is the most efficient way to get one’s salary in Ukraine?

In Ukraine, the salary payment process is organized by your company. The procedure is to open a salary account in a bank chosen by your company. However, employees can insist on having their salaries deposited into their accounts at any bank. UkrSibbank is the only local bank that provides foreigners with the salary project on the following conditions:

  • One part in UAH for local needs
  • One part in EUR or USD (which can be transferred to your country of origin at your request)

This solution is practical and beneficial. It enables you to avoid foreign currency exchange fees. If you are interested, we can present this technique at your company.

I am about to leave Ukraine. What do I have to do?

Please contact our branch two weeks in advance to prepare conveniently for your departure (last transfer with the remaining balance in all accounts). If the BNP Paribas Group exists in your destination country, we can contact the local subsidiary in order to introduce you and arrange everything for your arrival.

How can I protect myself from fraud, theft, and losses?

I can’t find my card. I’m afraid it might have been stolen!

Call 0 800 505 800 (toll-free from all landlines within Ukraine) or 380 44 590 06 90 (international calls) and block your card. If you find it later, you can call this number to unblock your card.

We advise you to subscribe to the SMS service, which will send you notifications about your transactions via SMS. Therefore, any case of fraudulent use will be easy to detect.

If you are the victim of any act of fraud, don’t hesitate to make a claim; UkrSibbank strictly observes international regulations and practices.

How can I protect myself against fraud with my card?

The SMS service (SMS notifications about transactions) is the best and fastest way to detect fraudulent use of your card. You can subscribe to it at our ATMs, our international branch, or online, or by calling our Customer Relations Center.

We also suggest that you maintain reasonable limits on your cards and increase them on a one-time basis for transactions with exceptional amounts. To change your limits, call 0 800 505 800 (toll-free from all landlines within Ukraine) or 380 44 590 06 90 (international calls). You can choose a limit for a specific time period (temporarily) or on a permanent basis (up to the card expiration date or submission of an application to change the limits).

Using the savings accounts in your package will protect your money. Savings accounts cannot be used for making payments.

Managing My Accounts Online
When I enter my secret code online, I get the following message: “incorrect.”

The on-screen electronic keyboard is very sensitive to the simple passage of the mouse’s cursor over numbers. This system is more secure, but can induce involuntary entries.

I don’t understand the purpose of each account.

First of all, make sure you are using the English version. Second, have the branch explain your accounts to you and then rename them online, if necessary.

How can I make payments online, for example, paying my children’s school fees?

At your branch inquire about which fields the beneficiary data should be filled in. Then you will be able to use the beneficiary account for subsequent payments. Online payments are not only more convenient in Ukraine, but also less costly.

The Ukrainian Banking System
Why are interest rates in Ukraine so high and volatile?

The monetary policy of the Central Bank is aimed at insuring the stability of the UAH/USD exchange rate. The UAH interest rate is used as an adjustable variable. The UAH rate is also used to compensate for inflation, which is structurally high in Ukraine.

Where the USD and EUR are concerned, the reasons are different. Most banks cannot obtain financing abroad in order to lend it to Ukrainian companies in USD or EUR. That’s why they have to attract the necessary deposits in Ukraine. The local market is thus disconnected from the global one.

How does the exchange rate change in Ukraine?

The government aims at insuring stability of the USD/UAH exchange rate, which depends on the EUR/USD rate. Nevertheless, the exchange rate is subject to sudden drastic changes (devaluation, for example). We recommend that our clients not take risks with their savings.

My Work and Activities
Authentication of My Competencies and Diplomas. What is the apostille and where can I get it?

The apostille is a document that serves to legalize your official documents with the Ukrainian authorities. Documents, such as your diploma, used to obtain a work permit, marriage certificate, and child’s birth certificate must have an apostille to be recognized in Ukraine.

In France, apostilles are issued by the Cours d’appel.

The wages paid on a salary are partly paid by the employer and partly taken from the amount to be paid to the employee. On the employer’s side, between 36.7 and 49.7 % are deducted for local social contributions; the employee’s social contributions amount to 3.6 %.

On the employee’s side, local tax on income of 15% is be paid on the first salary tranche under 10,730 UAH (these amounts are subject to change!). Amounts above this figure are taxed at 17 %.I Want to Start My Own Business.

I want to move to Ukraine and start a company. Can I apply for a temporary residence permit?

Should you have questions about starting a business in Ukraine, our international branch personnel will be happy to help you.

Practical Information (Housing, Vehicles)
Housing, address of residence. Should I register my address and how should I do this?

Yes, registering your address is an important step in the process of obtaining a residence permit. Unlike France, where your home address can be verfied upon the presentation of a home leasing contract, electricity or telephone bill, or a housing certificate, administrative procedures in Ukraine are very formal.

Before submitting the application to register of the address of your residence to the Migration Service (they will put the stamp with your address on your residence permit), you should obtain a written agreement of all the co-owners of your flat. The coowners’ signatures must be certified in front of an officer of your district municipal department.

Each change of address must also be reported to the authorities within 10 days (or 7 days, if the new residence is in the same district) under penalty of a fine and court summons.

Transporation: My Vehicle. Can I bring my car to Ukraine and use my foreign driving license?

Yes, you have the right to enter Ukraine with your foreignregistered car for a period that may not exceed one year. However, you do not have the right to lend or sell it in Ukraine. Your French driver’s license is valid in Ukraine (exception: if you are considered a permanent resident of Ukraine).
