More than 200 women and girls from Zimbabwe have fallen prey to false advertising for high paying jobs in Kuwait and other Arab states in the Middle East, only to find themselves being victims of human trafficking, subjected to slavery and sexual abuse by their employers. An estimated 60-of the victimized women and girls have been rescued and returned home safely, due to efforts of Zimbabwean parliamentarians, non-government organizations and some business people. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UODC) has stated that human trafficking, defined as the acquisition of people by improper means such as force, fraud or deception, with the intention of exploiting them, is a worldwide problem, targeted at vulnerable populations looking for a better life. The UODC challenges all countries to target traffickers and step up efforts to identify and assist victims of trafficking and smuggled migrants, many who endure imaginable hardships.
