US Gives $23 million for Tibetan exiles in India and Nepal

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) awarded a grant of $23 million over five years to strengthen self-reliance and resilience of Tibetan communities in South Asia. The overall goal of the program is to strengthening Tibetan communities equipping them to thrive economically, become effective leaders, and maintain the vitality of their communities and institutions while retaining their unique identity and culture. Key program areas consists of leadership development, institutional capacity building, establishment of a banking-like institution, and integrated settlement development through community participatory process. The programs will seek to maximize local participation and ownership of the development, and incorporate women’s perspective and participation in the design and implementation of all sustainable livelihoods strategies.
