July 27, 2016

Tianna Hawkins, a 6’3” forward, is now in her third year with the Mystics.  Drafted in the first round of the 2013 draft, Hawkins has settled into a nice reserve role for the Mystics in 2016.  After she missed the 2015 season while pregnant with her son, Emanuel, Hawkins has come back ready to compete again in 2016, averaging 4.7 ppg and 10.5 mpg.

“Each night I focus on the game plan we have and make sure I do what I do best,” Hawkins said of her growth as a player.  “I think my main focus is that I need to communicate a lot more and step out of my comfort zone.”

In Hawkins’ sophomore season, she was traded to the Mystics, where she saw an improvement in both minutes per game and points per game from her time in Seattle.

She played her rookie season for the Seattle Storm. There, she averaged 3.4 ppg and 1.6 rpg.

While playing for Maryland, Hawkins was number one in the NCAA with a field goal percentage of 62.3 in 2012.  In both her junior and senior years, she was named to the All-ACC and the All-ACC Tournament Teams.  Over her four years at Maryland, she improved from 9.2 ppg to 18.0 ppg.

How about off the court?

Calling herself “clumsy, happy, and shy,” Hawkins is one of the quieter players on the team.  She grew up with her twin sister, Tierra, who played basketball at Delaware State and looks up most to her mother, Latanya, who raised the two sisters.

Born in D.C. and having attended high school in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Hawkins has been in the Washington, D.C. area for most of her life.  She likes to spend her free time in the city shopping and having fun by going out with her friends.  Her favorite places in D.C. are along U Street and Adams Morgan, which both have plenty of great dining options, her favorite of which is Ben’s Next Door.

A graduate of University of Maryland with a degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice, Hawkins would like to become a federal agent after her professional career.  In college, she even had the opportunity to intern with the Secret Service.
