Being accountable for silence in Collinsville

Collinsville City Councilman Jeff Stehman is taking exception to a Freedom of Information Act request for records from his employer, the City of O’Fallon. Public servants need to have thick skin and view transparency and disclosure as an ally, not an enemy.

Bathroom monitors with flashlights?

Local state lawmakers are supporting House Bill 4474, which would essentially push local schools to segregate transgender teens into separate locker rooms and bathrooms. Separate but equal failed regarding race, and it certainly has no place in the Land of Lincoln regarding transgender teens or anyone else.

Check the math

You might want to check the math used by the “Editorial Board” in the April 4 article, “Thank a veteran, pay more in taxes.”

Pay discrimination

Belleville News-Democrat, April 5, Belleville OKs raise for police officers. A percent pay raise. I thought Americans were not a discriminating people. I remember when you got a cent per hour pay increase, everyone got the pay raise.

Thank you, volunteers

April 10-16 is National Volunteer Week and we at Family Hospice would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our volunteers, whether they are office assistants, event planners or patient visitors.

A pretty goofy idea

There have been attempts to hold firearm manufacturers liable for injuries or deaths caused by the unlawful use of their products. This is a pretty goofy idea.

For St. Louis, Illinois is a thousand miles away

In 1970, I held a clerical position in downtown St. Louis. About 10 percent of my fellow employees called Illinois home. This was at a time when white flight from north St. Louis was at it’s zenith.

Choose location for security

Missouri says it is not political. St. Louis says it will help rehabilitate a crime area. As a taxpayer and having been involved in Intel projects, Scott AFB sounds like the logical and sensible place to relocate the NGA.

Collective deficiencies

The Belle Valley School Board led by board president Karen Kunz suffers from what I refer to as “collective horizontal trait deficiencies” which include a lack of integrity, intelligence, initiative, judgment and common sense. This means that when people of similar deficiencies are placed together to make joint decisions, the quality of their collective decisions does not improve. It remains relatively flat.

Turn SLU basketball around

St. Louis University men’s basketball went from the top of the A-10 to near the bottom in less than two years. While much of the free fall can be attributed to poor recruiting by the recently dismissed coaching staff, the SLU administration needs to shoulder significant blame.

The end result

Donald Trump is an odd amalgam of P.T. Barnum, Benita Mussolini, and Juan Peron. He reflects the devious snake-oil salesmanship of Barnum, the bombastic histrionics of Mussolini, and the chameleon-like opportunism of Peron.

One thing in common

The GOP and religion have one thing in common — both deny science and make up their own facts.

Guest Viewpoint: The fall of Illinois manufacturing

When Marty Flaska moved his forklift-manufacturing business to Illinois 18 years ago, he didn’t think to look at the cost of operating in other states. In 2014, out of curiosity, his son ran the numbers.

Guest Viewpoint: Unthinkable budget scenario for schools now not so far-fetched

It is almost unthinkable that we would not have a K-12 education budget in place before the start of the next school year. However, that scenario is looming as more of a possibility with each passing week of the current political stalemate.

St. Louis is a poor security choice for NGA

Your editorial was spot on. I lived in Washington for nine years including two Pentagon tours. After 9/11, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld directed all military related agencies be relocated from Crystal City, which is a huge office/apartment/hotel development between Reagan-National Airport and the Pentagon.

Thanks for panhandling article

Thank you to the Belleville News-Democrat and Robyn Kirsch for a thorough and even-handed article on panhandling. Making judgments about this activity run the gamut from mercy, to safety concerns, to condemnation.
