Week 10: Marshall Commandos

The Chicago Sky has selected John Marshall Metropolitan High School as the tenth “High School Team of the Week” winner for its 2015 competition. The team earned the honor after being nominated for outstanding efforts and achievements as a team and within the local community.

The Marshall Commandos compete in the Chicago Public League, and the varsity team has just completed a very successful regular season. With just eight players on their roster, most of whom are sophomores, the Commandos dedication and efforts during the course of the season led the team to a 21-6 overall record and a third place finish in this year’s city playoffs. Under the leadership of head coach Dorothy Gaters, the winningest coach in Illinois high school basketball history, the Commandos are continuing a tradition of success on the court.

When the Commandos aren’t on the court, they spend their time giving back in the community. This season, Commandos players wrote letters to military personnel serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and helped coach local children at a basketball skills camp. Recently, the team’s players have been involved in efforts to shovel snow in several different locations in their community, including the sidewalk of a local church.

John Marshall Metropolitan High School joins Oswego High School, Luther North College Prep, Glenbard East High School, Beecher High School, J. Sterling Morton High School, Reavis High School, Benet Academy, Lyons Township High School, and Prospect High School as 2015 award recipients. As a Chicago Sky “High School Basketball Team of the Week” award winner, the Marshall Commandos are invited to enjoy a Chicago Sky game, where they will have the opportunity to watch the world’s best female basketball players. At halftime of the game, the team will be honored at center court.
