A Very Indie Holiday Playlist

Posted on Dec 18, 2013 by Rachel1016

Last week we brought you the Ultimate Classic Holiday Playlist, a collection of tunes that have become standards in the holiday music canon. And even though these cherished songs only come around once a year, one could argue that by mid-December they get a little stale. (YEAH. WE SAID IT.)

So, if you're in the mood for a little Yuletide refresher, here are some holiday tunes that you maybe haven't heard before! Including both heartfelt renditions of classics and original compositions, some are fun, some are somber, and some are straight-up weird! But we're pretty confident that all of them are going to bring you a healthy dose of not-at-all-ironic holiday cheer. This isn't your grandmother's playlist, guys! (But we're pretty sure she'd actually love it anyway.)

That Was The Worst Christmas Ever! - Sufjan Stevens
Alright! Starting it off with a party! The not-so-holly-jolly subject matter aside, this Sufjan original is an example of the songwriter's unique talent for pairing earnest stories with compelling, catchy melodies.

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas - She & Him
It is pretty much known fact that Zooey Deschanel is indie rock's #1 diva, so we'd be terribly remiss to not include her and M. Ward's cover of this wistful classic.

The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late) - Alvin & The Chipmunks
Chances are, you've actually heard this one before. Grab your helium balloons and sing along, y'all!

Getting Ready For Christmas Day - Paul Simon
You'd have no idea this tune was a Christmas song if it weren't for the lyrics. Laid over Paul Simon's signature buoyant, campfire-like instrumentation, the song features a sample of the gospel singer and preacher, The Revered J.M. Gates and is about a son returning from Iraq for the holidays.

Christmas Lights - Coldplay
Even though the holidays seem to insist that the universe be super cheerful for an entire month, this time of year can actually be really tough. Coldplay know know feeling, and they put on their best melancholy for a story of Christmas longing.

Feliz Navidad - Sea of Bees
This delicate folk version of José Feliciano's classic is totally surprising and really delightful.

The Christmas Song - The Raveonettes
Brooding vocals + grungy garage textures + Danish roots = Automatic Indie Cool.

Ho Ho Hopefully - The Maine
Who doesn't love a little pop-punk take on romance during the holidays? Or a Santa pun? I mean…come on, guys!

Valley Winter Song - Fountains of Wayne
You might know Fountains of Wayne because of their famous ode to "Stacy's Mom," but the band actually have a nice little collection of other great songs in their arsenal. This little number is one of them.

Wonderful Christmastime - The Shins
Indie heavy-hitters The Shins don't stray too far from the classic tune's original arrangement, but The Shins can sort of do whatever they want.
