Vladimir Horowitz is a great pianist of the XXth century, a pride and glory of the whole mankind. From numerous utterances of famous musicians and critics it is enough to cite only one of them: "From time to time, an artist appears in our lives who makes such an impact that we, who are touched by him, are never the same" (Daniel Pollack, the USA)

Vladimir Horowitz was born in Kyiv on October 1, 1903. In 1913 he entered the Kyiv Music College, which was later renamed into Kyiv Conservatoire. He studied under the famous teachers - Vladimir Pukhalsky, SergeiTarnowsky, Felix Blumenfeld. After graduating from the Kyiv Conservatoire in 1920, he began his brilliant career of a pianist that continued till his death in 1989. Critics of that time noted an extraordinary talent of a young musician, his fantastic technique, "demonic temperament". From 1922 to 1925 Horowitz gave approximately 500 concerts in cities of the USSR winning recognition of the first virtuoso of the country. Horowitz recalled that at that time he had hold 12 concert programmes

In January 1923 V.Horowitz and his friend - afterwards a world known musician Nathan Milstein - gave several concerts in Moscow. They had such a big success that A.Lunacharskyy called them "Children of the Revolution" and this definition followed them till 1925, when they moved abroad.

From 1925 to 1928 he toured around almost all European countries and at the age of 25 he became one of the most popular pianists- performers.

In 1928 Vladimir Horowitz moved to the USA where he lived all his life touring around the cities of South America and Europe from time to time.

In 1986 after a long interval an 83-year-old Maestro performed in Moscow and Leningrad.

For more than 60 years a great pianist gave people of the world joy and pleasure from meeting with wonderful music. Presidents and Kings, outstanding politicians, famous composers and musicians were among his admirers. Each Horowitz's concert turned to a considerable event of musical life in different countries of the world. Performing genius of Vladimir Horowitz was recognized as a template of piano art of the XX^th century. In press comments, his friends and students' recollections Vladimir Horowitz has remained "the only one musician whose achievements are seemed something supernatural for others musicians".

The words: "Horowitz - King of Kings among pianists that are and have ever been" were written about Horowitz during his life.
In 1994 in Kyiv the International competition for young Pianists in Memory of Vladimir Horowitz was founded.
In 1999 a memorial tablet in honour of our great compatriot was placed on the house where Vladimir Horowitz lived in Kyiv.
