A top official of the Texas health care group that treated Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan said Thursday “we made mistakes.” Dr. Daniel Varga said the group was “deeply sorry” that it did not identify the virus when Mr. Duncan first sought treatment. And, he said there had been no Ebola training for hospital staff before Mr. Duncan was admitted.

Dr. Varga’s prepared statement was presented to U.S. lawmakers during a hearing about Ebola. U.S. health officials also testified about how to identify and control the virus.

Two Texas health care workers who treated Mr. Duncan are also infected with the Ebola virus. One of them, Nina Pham is to be flown to the National Institutes of Health isolation unit in Bethesda, Maryland. The other, Amber Vinson, was flown out of Dallas Wednesday. She is being treated at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. In August, that hospital successfully treated two other Americans with Ebola.

Rights Group: More than 600 Killed in Kobani Fighting

A human rights group said more than 600 people have been killed in the month-long battle for the town of Kobani, along Syria's border with Turkey. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Thursday that 374 of the dead were Islamic State militants.

It said 258 Kurdish fighters and 10 supporters were also killed along with 20 civilians. The group said it believes the total number of deaths may be two times higher.  It said both the Islamic State and Kurdish forces are extremely secretive about casualties.

The U.S. government said U.S.-led airstrikes near Kobani have killed "several hundred" Islamic State fighters.  But U.S. officials said the town could still fall to the militants.

Ukrainian and Russian Leaders Expected to talk at Meeting

European leaders are holding their first official meeting since June with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The two-day European Union-Asia leaders meeting is taking place in Milan, Italy. European Council president Herman Van Rompuy opened the meeting. He said the crisis in Ukraine was affecting the security of the continent. During the meeting, Mr. Putin is expected to hold talks with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

The EU and the United States have enforced sanctions against Russia for annexing Crimea and supporting rebels in Ukraine. Russia denies aiding the rebels and has enforced its own sanctions.

Hong Kong Government Open to Talks

Hong Kong leader Leung Chun-ying says he is looking for ways to continue talks aimed at ending pro-democracy protests. Such talks could begin as early as next week. Mr. Leung spoke to reporters in the Chinese territory Thursday.

He said that he could not change Beijing’s decision in August to choose candidates in the 2017 Hong Kong chief executive elections.

Earlier Thursday, Hong Kong police used pepper spray against protesters near government headquarters. The government considers the protests illegal.

I think that a patient infected with Ebola should not be carried to Hospitals without conditions enough to treat them. Isolation units, well-formed personnel and protecting equipment are essential to treat people infected.

It is very pathetic to note that two medical staffs in the U.S got the Ebola virus. But the ray of hope is that they have been admitted to a hospital where Ebola cases were successfully treated recently. Thank you. Causality- a person who is killed or injured in a war or in an accident.2. A thing that is lost or damaged or destroyed. There were great causalities on both the sides. Battle- fight between organized forces. We have to fight a battle against prejudices. Sanction- penalty attached to non-observance of law or treaty.Annex- add or join to a larger group.2. take possession of a country. The British rulers annexed a number of Indian states and enlarged the British Empire. Thank you.

Dear Kreutzer,
Thanks for your comment. Here are my suggestions:
The two countries has a extremely horrible battle.
> The two countries had an extremely horrible battle. (or you could just say, 'a horrible battle' because you don't need to intensify (use 'extremely') a word that is already very strong (horrible))

Before Ebola spreading, the government found a isolation unit for treating patients who is infected.
> To keep Ebola from spreading, the government found an isolation unit for treating patients who are infected.

Casuality:They found a lot of dead casualities after the battle.
> I don't think you can use 'dead' to modify 'casualties.' The word means people who are killed or wounded. If you want to refer to those who have been killed, you would use the term, 'fatalities.'
Sanction.Russia was isolated from the world and I think they should get severe sanction for the actions they have made.
