As the self-appointed "Heart of Dixie," Alabama offers a friendly experience where the accents are often as thick as the sweltering humidity that blankets the state much of the year. Most residents have a strong preference between Alabama and Auburn, and when the state's two biggest universities compete in the annual Iron Bowl all eyes are tuned to the big game. Alabama has played a key role in the nation's Civil Rights movement and it remains a major player in the cotton, automotive, and aerospace fields. Visitors shouldn't miss out on the state's barbecue, the tastiest of which can stand rib-to-rib with the nation's best.
