Three drive modes

In addition to normal operating mode Prius offers three driver-selectable modes: EV, 14 15 ECO and POWER. EV Mode allows Prius to run on battery power alone for up to one mile; ECO helps improve fuel economy by adjusting throttle input and climate control; and POWER helps create a more spirited driving experience.

Starting

With a Smart Key 17 fob in your pocket or purse, push the Power button, and you are ready to go. If the battery power is low the gas engine may start instead, otherwise Prius will move on battery power alone. If Prius senses it needs more power than the battery can provide, the gas engine will take over.

More Info

Normal operation

Prius can start moving at lower speeds by using only the electric motor (no gasoline required). As you drive along, the car’s computer will automatically switch from electric to gas, or use a combination of the two to produce the most fuel-efficient driving.

More Info

Prius Five shown in Classic Silver Metallic with available Advanced Technology Package. The preceding is based on a likely scenario for optimal driving conditions.

Full acceleration

During full acceleration, the gasoline engine is used while the battery supplies increased drive power to the electric motor.

Regenerative braking

Prius takes advantage of every possible opportunity to harness energy and use it efficiently—and that goes for the braking system too. As you apply the brakes in Prius, you’re making power that will be stored in the system battery for more EV-only operation and increased fuel savings.

More Info

Prius Five shown in Classic Silver Metallic with available Advanced Technology Package. The preceding is based on a likely scenario for optimal driving conditions.

Stopping

When Prius comes to a stop, its gasoline engine shuts off to conserve fuel and reduce emissions. Pressing the gas pedal lightly will move Prius using electricity alone, while more pressure will automatically start the gas engine to provide more power.

Low drag coefficient

Coefficient of Drag (Cd) is a measurement of how effectively a vehicle’s shape slices through the air. The lower its drag coefficient, the more aerodynamic it is, which means it requires less energy to push it through the air. With a Cd of only 0.25, Prius is one of the most aerodynamic production cars in the world.

Aerodynamic styling

Almost every inch of the body of the Prius was designed with a purpose: cheating the wind. Flowing lines and purposeful edge detailing conspire to reduce wind resistance for a quieter ride and greater fuel efficiency.

DRL & LED headlights

Daytime Running Lights (DRL), which switch on whenever the engine does, help prevent daytime head-on collisions by making you more visible. Prius Five comes standard with LED (light-emitting diode) headlights, which use 20% to 30% less energy than traditional headlights and have auto level control, auto on/off and headlight cleaners.

Solar Roof

If you want to stay cool, park in the sun. The available Solar Roof 9 is embedded with solar panels that can power a fan to circulate ambient air through the cabin when Prius is parked in direct sunlight. This feature helps keep cabin air temperature close to that of the outside air for a more comfortable return to the vehicle.

View Specs

Remote Air Conditioning System

Part of the Solar Roof and Deluxe Solar Roof packages, 9 Remote Air Conditioning 18 can cool the cabin of Prius before you get in by activating the electric air conditioning compressor. Using your key fob, you can turn the air conditioning system on from up to 30 yards away, and run it on hybrid system battery power for up to three minutes.

Smart Key System standard

Within three feet of your Prius, with the Smart Key 17 fob in your pocket or purse, interior lights illuminate, the driver’s door can be unlocked, and the vehicle can be started with the push of a button. On Prius Three, Four and Five, it also allows you to open both front doors and the rear hatch.
