New York City is where Bobby Thomson hit the "shot heard 'round the world" and where Willis Reed limped onto the court to play in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. New York Mets Baseball

New York City's National League franchise is younger than the Yankees and has a reputation as a plucky underdog. Its ballpark was designed to resemble Ebbets Field, home to spiritual forefathers the Brooklyn Dodgers (the Mets were formed shortly after the Dodgers and the New York Giants left town for the West Coast). The team's star players include David Wright and Curtis Granderson.

New York Yankees Baseball

One of the most famous and successful franchises in sports, the Yankees have won a staggering 27 World Series championships; no other team comes close. Former players like Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle are as much a part of American folklore as they are athletes. The 2014 season is widely expected to be the last for Derek Jeter, so catch him if you can. If you're bringing the kids, you might want to avoid the bleachers—the language can get pretty salty out there.

Brooklyn Cyclones Baseball

The Mets' short-season Single-A minor league affiliate plays by the beach at MCU Park in Coney Island. The organization is known for wacky themed promotions, which this year include nights themed around zombies and Seinfeld. Future Mets like Ike Davis and Bobby Parnell were Cyclones before reaching the big leagues.

Staten Island Yankees Baseball
When: Home opener is June 13; regular season runs through September 1
Where: Richmond County Bank Ballpark

The "Baby Bombers" are a short-season Single-A minor league affiliate of the big-league Yankees. They play at Richmond County Bank Ballpark, a waterfront stadium whose views are considered by many to be among the best in all of sports. Staten Island Yankees who have reached the majors include Robinson Cano and Chien-Ming Wang.

New York Jets Football
When: Home opener September 7; regular season runs through December
Where: MetLife Stadium

Gang Green shares a home with the Giants, but the team has always had a bit more of a flair for back-page dramatics than its stadium mates (Lawrence Taylor era aside): say, the antics of charismatic quarterback Joe Namath—who led the squad to a Super Bowl III victory—or more recent coach-and-player-related controversies.

New York Giants Football
When: Home opener September 14; regular season runs through December

Eli Manning has led the New York Football Giants to two Super Bowl victories during his decadelong tenure as quarterback. The team plays at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, a quick train or bus ride from Manhattan.

Brooklyn Bolts Football

Brooklyn's team will be among four entrants in the new Fall Experimental Football League (FXFL). Early reports say the league hopes to stock its ranks with promising players who were cut from NFL rosters during the preseason, and to build itself into a football equivalent of the NBA Development League. If nothing else, the team could give sports fans a reason to head out to Coney Island after the Cyclones' baseball season is over.

New York Rangers Hockey
When: Home opener October 12; regular season runs through April

Fans of the Blueshirts, as the Rangers are affectionately known, pack the Garden even when the team is having a down year and lend the arena one of the more intense atmospheres in New York City sports. To see the stands particularly charged, come to a game when the Rangers host the Islanders.

New York Knicks Basketball

Manhattan's NBA team boasts a rich history that includes a pair of titles and more than a fair amount of tabloid drama, and its rabid fan base always makes a game at Madison Square Garden—which has just been renovated—feel like an event. Celebrities, most prominently the omnipresent Spike Lee, frequently sit courtside.

Brooklyn Nets Basketball

New York City's newest big-league sports team plays in Brooklyn's Barclays Center. The Nets' black-and-white gear has become a staple on the borough's streets, and they've acquired star players like Deron Williams and Kevin Garnett. Still, they're a bit of an easier ticket than the Knicks.

New York Red Bulls Soccer
When: Home opener is March 15; regular season runs through October
Where: Red Bull Arena

Thierry Henry leads the New York Red Bulls, the local entry (to be joined by New York City FC in 2015) in Major League Soccer—the top soccer league in the United States. Red Bull Arena, widely considered among the best soccer-specific stadiums in the nation, features stands with metal flooring that fans can stomp on, and the place gets loud for big games.

New York Liberty Basketball
When: Opening night is May 17; regular season runs through August 17
Where: Madison Square Garden

New York City's WNBA team returns to Madison Square Garden this season after playing across the river in New Jersey for a couple of years while their home was being renovated. It's more affordable to buy Liberty tickets than to go see the Knicks, which is one reason the squad has a family-friendly reputation.

For out-of-towners, one of the more familiar images of New York City during the winter is probably that of ice-skaters making their way around the rink at Rockefeller Center (thanks, NBC). Brazil vs. Ecuador (soccer)

Those who don't want the international soccer fun to end after the World Cup can take heart as MetLife Stadium hosts a friendly clash of CONMEBOL powers. It's part of the Brazilian team's tour through the United States.

Gotham Girls Roller Derby Championship Bout

The competitors of Gotham Girls Roller Derby skate fast and hit hard. You may not know what jammers, blockers and pivots are when you enter the gym, but longtime aficionados can attest: this is adrenaline-pumping, cheer-inducing stuff. As if the action in the rink weren't enough, spirit-boosting jeerleaders are on hand to rally the crowd.

Dew Tour City Championships: Brooklyn
When: September 20–21

A traveling extreme sports competition comes to Brooklyn, and brings top skateboarders and BMX riders to town. Action will take place on courses inside the House of Vans and outside on Franklin Street. Admission is free on a first-come, first-served basis. New York Islanders vs. New Jersey Devils
When: September 26

The Islanders are scheduled to move to Brooklyn in the fall of 2015, and fans can see them take the Barclays Center ice a bit early in this preseason matchup against New Jersey's entrant in the NHL. It's a chance to watch Islanders star John Tavares and living legend Jaromir Jagr of the Devils—who, yes, is still playing—up close.

New York City Marathon
When: November 2
Where: All five boroughs, finishing at Central Park

This is the participatory sporting event to end all participatory sporting events, during which roughly 48,000 competitors endure a punishing 26.2-mile journey through all five boroughs. Amateurs run the same route as professional stars, and millions of fans cheer them every step of the way. Marathoners compete not only on two legs but also on prostheses and wheels.

2K Sports Classic
When: November 20–21

Syracuse, Texas, California and Iowa compete in an early-season hoops tournament at Madison Square Garden. It's a chance to see young talent find its feet long before the pressure of March—and Syracuse, in particular, always brings passionate fans to the Garden.

Coaches vs. Cancer Classic
When: November 21–22

Stanford, Temple, UNLV and the singularly polarizing college basketball force known as Duke square off at Barclays Center early in the season. The action on the court and the atmosphere in the stands should make for a fun weekend, and proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.

Lehigh vs. Lafayette (football)

It may not get the same press as, say, Auburn vs. Alabama, but the Lehigh vs. Lafayette football rivalry is the most-played one in college history. For their 150th meeting, they'll square off in the Bronx.

Legends Classic
When: November 24–25

Villanova, Michigan, VCU and Oregon—2014 NCAA Tournament teams, all—play at the Barclays Center. While we can't endorse using the term "Championship Rounds" to describe semifinals that are preordained no matter what happens earlier in this so-called "tournament," the action during these two days should be a treat for college basketball fans.

NIT Season Tip-Off
When: November 26–28

This long-running college basketball event takes on a different look in 2014, eschewing the 16-team single-elimination bracket and embracing the now-popular "showcase" format. As a result, the semifinals are set: St. John's, Minnesota, Gonzaga and Georgia. While there will be no exciting early round upsets, fans of each team can now plan their NYC trips with confidence. On Thanksgiving, smaller schools—LIU Brooklyn, Stony Brook, Western Kentucky and St. Joseph's—will play a doubleheader of their own.

Barclays Center Classic

La Salle, Rutgers, Vanderbilt and 2014 ACC champion Virginia square off in Brooklyn in this early-season tournament.

Cornell vs. Penn State (Hockey)

Cornell has a long history of success in Division I college hockey, while Penn State has only recently brought its program to the highest level. The two schools, both of which have plenty of enthusiastic New York City alumni, face off in Madison Square Garden's annual college hockey showcase.

Pro Bull Riders

While a bull-riding competition in New York City might seem as incongruous as a kosher deli in Alabama, this Professional Bull Riders (PBR) showdown has quickly become one of the City's most anticipated annual sporting events. The action is fast and tough, and involves trying to hold on to a one-ton bucking bull for eight seconds. NBA All-Star Weekend

The NBA's stars come to New York City for three days—Brooklyn's Barclays Center is set to host events like the Rising Stars game and the Slam Dunk Contest, while Madison Square Garden will be the site of the game itself.

CBS Sports Classic

College basketball tournaments are inordinately enthusiastic about dubbing themselves "classic." This event's never even been played before, after all. Semantics aside, it should be a good one: four of the NCAA's most storied programs—Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio State and UCLA—will take the court in Brooklyn during the 2015 holiday season.

NCAA Wrestling Championships
When: March 17–19, 2016

This ain't WrestleMania: there will be no complicated story lines, amplified trash talk or pyrotechnics when the nation's best college wrestlers gather at Madison Square Garden—just good old fashioned grappling.
