There's new hope for people like Sheri Hicks of Farmington who are living with scleroderma. Researchers from the University of Michigan and Michigan State University collaborated on the discovery of a genetic pathway, or on-off switch of sorts, that could potentially lead to treatments for scleroderma and other autoimmune disorders that cause fibrosis.

The U.S. has plummeted to 31st place in the annual Save the Children rankings on the state of the world's mothers, issued last week — just in time for Mother's Day. We fell the farthest, next to Cyprus, of any country of the 178 nations analyzed for the report. The reasons are threefold: Our failing health — both women's and children's — and our stunning lack of women in political leadership roles.
