American / National SKILL
Pat Angerer - LB - Free Agent

Falcons released LB Pat Angerer.

They also cut FB Maurice Hagens. Angerer appears to have been beaten out by Tim Dobbins and rookie Yawin Smallwood, although the latter two remain on Atlanta's roster bubble. Long injury prone, Angerer suffered a concussion just nine days after the Falcons signed him in late June, sealing his fate.

Giovani Bernard - RB - Bengals

The Bengals' website suggests the team "must have thunder and lightning dancing through their heads" following rookie Jeremy Hill's performance in Thursday night's preseason finale.

Given a whopping 26 touches, Hill totaled 160 yards while earning the respect of veteran teammates. Terence Newman and Jason Campbell both praised Hill for the effort, which included a funny-bone injury from which Hill returned to put the game away. Bengals.com's Geoff Hobson noted that Hill's workload "typified what new (OC) Hue Jackson wants," as he demonstrated "power," "speed," "vision," and "creativity," particularly on a weaving 41-yard screen pass where Hill "deked" a safety. Hill also "picked up a couple of blitzes," although he missed one, resulting in a sack of Campbell. Hill's ADP has climbed into the back portion of round nine in 12-team leagues, where he remains a value pick. Hill and Gio Bernard are expected to share carries this season in the "Thunder and Lightning" committee.

Derek Carr - QB - Raiders

The San Francisco Chronicle's Vic Tafur believes there's a 100 percent chance Derek Carr is the Raiders' starting quarterback Week 1 against the Jets.

All signs have been pointing to this since Carr torched the Seahawks in last night's preseason finale. Coach Dennis Allen, who had previously been adamant that Matt Schaub would start the opener, became more wishy-washy with his comments Thursday night. It's led beat writers to believe Carr is going to get the nod two Sundays from now in the Meadowlands. Schaub's arm is shot, while Carr's is cocked and loaded with big-time talent. In three preseason games, Carr was 30-of-45 passing for 326 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception.

Stevan Ridley - RB - Patriots

ESPN Boston now has Stevan Ridley making the Patriots' 53-man roster after leaving him off it earlier this week.

Beat writer Mike Reiss "played a hunch" last time around, but now admits it "looks like that was off the mark." Last week, Reiss left Ridley off the roster in favor of Jonas Gray. Gray now gets the boot, and Ridley makes it because rookie James White hasn't shown enough. We expect Vereen to play the vast majority of running back snaps in New England, but Ridley has the early edge for short-yardage and goal-line work with an opportunity to expand his role with good play. We still like Ridley at his eighth-round ADP as a boom-or-bust RB2.

Michael Sam - DL - Rams

NFL Network's Mike Silver doesn't expect Michael Sam to make the Rams' 53-man roster.

It's certainly not because he hasn't earned it; there just isn't enough room if the Rams are only going to keep nine linemen. Sam is competing with UDFA DE Ethan Westbrooks for the ninth spot. Westbrooks has registered one sack, three QB hits, and five hurries while grading out as Pro Football Focus' No. 1 4-3 end this preseason. Sam should make another team's 53. Silver has a strong connection with coach Jeff Fisher, so his opinion is worth noting.

Jerome Simpson - WR - Vikings

NFL suspended Vikings WR Jerome Simpson three games for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Simpson was in New York appealing the ban two weeks ago, apparently to no avail. It's not a huge loss, as Simpson has tumbled down the depth chart to No. 4. Cordarrelle Patterson, Greg Jennings, and Jarius Wright are Minnesota's top three wideouts. Simpson's suspension is the result of a November DUI.

Roger Goodell - C - Free Agent

FOX Sports' Mike Garafolo reports the NFL and NFLPA recently began formal talks to raise marijuana test levels.

Currently, the NFL's threshold of THC levels to trigger a positive marijuana test is 15 nanograms per milliliter. The NFL got that number from the World Anti-Doping Agency a few years ago, but WADA raised its level to 150 ng/ml last summer. MLB's threshold is 50 ng/ml. Just as Ray Rice's case forced the NFL to stiffen penalties against domestic violence, Josh Gordon's will likely be the one that gets the NFL to soften its stance against marijuana.

Akeem Ayers - LB - Titans

ESPN Titans reporter Paul Kuharsky believes it "feels like" OLB Akeem Ayers will be a backup rather than a key contributor off the edge in the new 3-4 defense.

If so, it's a big disappointment. Ayers would seem to fit this scheme perfectly. He's 6'3/253 with good speed and the ability to cover and get after the quarterback. It's possible Ayers may not be the same player after undergoing two separate knee operations on his patellar tendons in the offseason. Derrick Morgan, Kam Wimbley, and Shaun Phillips are ahead on the depth chart.
