Full Stack Web Developer

Technology Team | New York, NY OR Atlanta, GA

Position Overview

HowStuffWorks, Inc. is looking for a Full Stack Web developer to work in our New York or Atlanta office. This position will build web applications and other front-end experiences using the latest features found in the HTML5 and CSS3 specifications; as well as both jQuery and in-house Javascript libraries. This position includes development and maintenance of software in keeping with our architectural standards. This position also has backend development and significant work with relational databases

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop new software and work on various associated development tasks in accordance with pertinent established standards.
  • Participates in a cross-functional team and requires working successfully independently and collaboratively with other team members both internally and externally with other departments.
  • Read and review functional specifications and test cases to ensure accuracy and develop understanding of business requirements.
  • Perform code reviews to ensure best practices and standards across team members.
  • Monitor bug tracking (Jira) queue for tasks and update tasks with relevant information in a timely fashion.
  • Provides input into project technology issues and direction.
  • Understand scalability issues and adapt systems to evolving user and business needs
  • Recommend competitive advantages gained by emerging technologies.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years PHP and MySQL/PostgreSQL experience
  • 5+ years framework experience (ex: Zend Framework, Slim, etc)
  • 5+ years templating (Twig, Smarty)
  • 5+ years HTML, CSS & JavaScript experience
  • BS/BA degree in Computer Science or Engineering
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to write documentation including, but not limited to, technical specifications and use cases
  • Experience with AWS environments, databases, cloud based tools
  • Flash experience is a plus

Infrastructure Cloud Engineer - Devops

We see Devops as the process in which Software Engineering and IT work closely together to produce and grow high quality applications and systems for our customers and partners. The Infrastructure Engineer (Devops) uses his/her expertise and leadership in troubleshooting and automating our environment, building resilient systems, and creating repeatable processes. Requirements:

  • Provide application and system troubleshooting and problem solving across the application stack and cloud environment
  • Create and use customized scripts to automate repetitive tasks, configure and manage systems, monitor system health, and reporting metrics
  • Drive automation of monitoring tools and application deployment
  • Provide and improve incident and problem management coverage and support
  • Define and document current and future configuration processes and operating procedures

Skills:

Key Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with various business stakeholders to understand project requirements and define product approaches and visual direction
  • Design beautiful and functional interfaces and web pages based on principles of design and usability
  • Own the end-to-end design process and deliverable set (including wireframes, mockups, and cut assets for the developers) with frequent iteration and evolution of design solutions

Qualifications

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills – We are looking for a true team player who can own and speak to the design process while gracefully integrating feedback into their work
  • Experience using A/B and/or user testing data to inform the design process
  • High proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop and Illustrator)
  • Good general understanding of HTML, CSS, JS concepts and development

Senior Financial Analyst

Finance Team | New York, NY

Position Overview

Reporting to the VP of Finance in Bellevue, WA this highly visible position is responsible for driving key processes within InfoSpace’s HowStuffWorks business, including financial and operating metrics reporting, a full P&L forecast on a monthly basis, leading the annual budgeting process as well as performing ad hoc analysis in support of Sales, Marketing, Product Development and Executive Teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for monthly P&L forecast and operations review, focusing on the analysis of key historical and predictive business information, ensuring accuracy of financial results, appropriateness of future financial commitments, and explanations of variances to Budget.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process, including building all financial models to incorporate new initiative product plans, revenue targets and resource requirements.
  • Build and present monthly results and forecast packages to the leadership team, covering financial trends, forecast assumptions, and key business metrics.
  • Provide analytic support for product planning, marketing/advertising, engineering resource planning, and new business development.
  • Act as the primary contact for structuring and review of financial deal terms with revenue generating partners.
  • Support ad hoc financial projects involving sales, marketing and operations.
  • Assist in market sizing, competitive analysis and industry research in support of revenue projections, product positioning, and long range planning.

Qualifications

  • 2-5 years related business experience in a high tech industry (online advertising preferred).
  • Team player with strong analytical, technical and problem solving skills, as well as solid presentation and communication skills.
  • BA/BS in a related field (Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, etc…); MBA preferred, but not required.
  • Understanding of GAAP fundamentals necessary to translate business drivers into appropriate financial projections.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, particularly Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with Google Analytics desirable.

Position Overview

The Digital Publisher’s role is to analyze, publish and promote content on the HowStuffWorks.com website, along with sub-brand sites that fall under the HowStuffWorks.com umbrella. The Digital Publisher develops a thorough understanding of the existing content on the site and how that content has historically performed on the homepage, channel pages and social media. Using this knowledge, the Digital Publisher strategically selects content to feature on the site homepage, channel pages, in-page modules, and other areas across the site. The Digital Publisher also analyzes performance and trends using Google Analytics, Hitwise and other analytics tools.

Key Responsibilities

  • Selects content to feature on the HowStuffWorks.com homepage, channel pages and other parts of the site
  • Uses content management tools to manage and feature content
  • Analyzes homepage and website traffic and performance on a daily basis
  • Performs ongoing analysis using Google Analytics and uses this knowledge to develop and refine a content promotion strategy
