Over 400 Tibetans residing in the New York and New Jersey area observed the 30th birthday of Karmapa on June 22, 2014. (His birthday falls on June 26) The seventeenth Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje is the head of the Karma Kagyu of Kagyupa, which is one of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism. 

The observations began with prayers and talks without any cultural songs and dances as a respect to the recent demise of Shamar Rinpoche.

Former New York representative, Mr. Lobsang Nyandak and Tibet Fund Director, Rinchen Tharlo addressed the gathering.
