Security of payment card settlements

Payment cards are getting exceedingly popular today in the world and in Ukraine as a universal means of payment. Owing to this instrument, its owners can gain access to their account from different reception and servicing sites:

  • ATMs;
  • kiosks/POS-self-service terminals;
  • POS-terminals of a non-trading company (including those using contactless technologies);
  • Internet network (using card number);
  • Voice authorization during hotel reservation/car lease etc (using card number).

Payment systems spend significant amounts on an annual basis for the development and implementation of payment cards security systems. However, a card account owner has to comply with some rules preventing possible fraudulent actions.

The principal preventive actions to be taken when you are using a card

  • Never write down a card PIN-code on a signature string and d not keep the PIN code together with the card! The best way to memorize the PIN-code is to use PIN-code change service. The customers of Raiffeisen Bank Aval can do so with the help of ATM.
  • Get connected to the Mobile banking to receive information on all transactions in an online mode quickly. The customers of Raiffeisen Bank Aval can do so with the help of the bank’s information center and ATM.
  • When entering a PIN code, cover the keyboard with your hand or a different item. If the ATM looks different from its image on the screen (some items stuck to the PIN-keyboard or on the device for card reception, panel over the ATM screen has additional details), or suspicious persons are close by at the moment of the transaction, stop using the ATM and notify the information center of your bank about this incident.
  • Do not give your card details to third parties for the crediting of funds, for example, card number, effective period, verification code CVV2/CVC2 on the reverse side of the card. Use your account details for the transfers from strangers. The customers of Raiffeisen Bank Aval may get these details at the outlet of the bank or the information center.
  • Use 3D-secure (Verified by Visa/MasterCard Secure Code) technology for payments in the Internet. The customers of Raiffeisen Bank Aval can get connected to it, for example, with the help of ATM.
  • Check your account statement and balance at least once a month. The customers of Raiffeisen Bank Aval can do so, for example, using Internet banking system.
  • In case of card loss/theft or getting an SMS-notification on the transactions not authorized by you, please contact the Information center of the bank immediately.

Performing transactions via an ATM:

  • If the bank withdraws a card, please call the information center of your bank, notify about the incident and request zero limitation on all card transactions. Then please contact the outlet where the ATM is installed, requesting that the card should be returned (if the ATM is installed on the territory of the bank's outlet) or that the new card should be issued (for the period of expectation of the new card, in case that no additional cards to the account are available, the outlet employees may issue a temporary Instant card for the use of your account).
  • In case that third parties contact you during the use of the ATM, please ask them politely not to interfere, and stop using the ATM if third parties continue tracing your actions. If you need help, please contact the employees of an outlet or an information center of the bank.
  • In case of a failed transaction in the ATM you can contact the employees of the outlet or the information center.

The policy of limits under card transactions of Raiffeisen Bank Aval

Raiffeisen Bank Aval uses preliminarily set limits for transactions with payment cards depending on the card type, country of transaction and type of merchant.

The preliminarily set limit may be changed (increased or decreased), however, we recommend getting back to standard limits after the necessary transactions for the sake of keeping card security.

We also recommend you to provide the preliminary notification to the Information Center of the Bank about planned trips outside Ukraine, so that you can freely make purchases without any additional communication with the employees of the bank staying in the roaming zone.

For the Internet transactions and transactions without a card the limit equivalent to USD 200 per transaction was set, however, not more than the equivalent of USD 1000 per month (irrespective of the country of transaction and type of card).

Low risk countries:

USA, Canada, Israel, Russia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, China, UAE, Jordan, Euro zone countries (except for Albania, Macedonia, Romania, Bulgaria and Cyprus)

High risk countries:

The countries of Africa, South and Central America, Australia, Turkey.

The list of countries can be changed without an additional warning.

Individual limits are set following a call by the card owner to the round-the-clock information center of the bank: (044) 490 88 88, 0 800 500 500 and 521 (for ÌÒÑ users).

Internet Transactions

  • General security principles:
    • Set up antivirus software on your computer or a gadget. This will prevent the outflow of the information that you enter during transactions.
    • Please make purchases on the web sites familiar to you and those with good reputation (please check that the link to the web site is specified correctly, especially if you follow the link from your email message you received or a banner). Enter card data on a special page for purchases (they start with the symbols https:// ).
    • A separate card should be available for the Internet transactions, where you can set the limits independently.
    • With the help of an ATM please connect 3D-Secure (Verified by Visa/MasterCard Secure Code) service.
  • Internet payment using 3D-Secure technology (Verified by Visa/MasterCard Secure Code) service:
    • With the help of an ATM please connect 3D-Secure (Verified by Visa/MasterCard Secure Code). For this purpose please insert your card into the ATM, in the Additional Services menu choose «Ïï³äêëþ÷åííÿ äî 3Ä-Ñåêüþð» (Connection to 3D-Secure) and enter your mobile phone.
    • After getting an SMS – notification on the connection of the service (within 10 minutes) you will be able to perform the Internet transactions using 3D-Secure technology.
    • When carrying out the transaction and entering the card number on a special transactions page (https://...) you will get an SMS-message with an original numerical password to be entered to the page, to which browser will redirect you automatically. After you enter the original numerical password a transaction must be successful.
  • The advantages of connecting 3D-Secure:
    • No one but you will be able to make transactions on the merchant's protected web sites (where 3D-Secure technology is used to receive cards).
    • If transactions, which were not authorized by you, are performed with your card and not at 3D-Secure merchant, you may challenge them.
    • Some merchants use 3D-Secure technology for the first transaction, after which you can make purchases on such resource without checking CVV2/CVC2 (in an automatic mode).

The basic principles of secure settlements in the retail network

  • When making settlements with your card, please pay attention that the cashier is not watching you when you enter your PIN, and no mirrors or video cameras are installed next to the POS terminal.
  • When you use your card for settlements at the restaurant, please request that the waiter should bring the POS terminal (most institutions have mobile terminals already) or get to the POS-terminal together with the waiter, so that the settlement is made in your presence (if it is allowed to do so). So, controlling your actions with your card, you can secure yourself from possible reading of data from the magnetic string of your card and its subsequent forgery.

Raiffeisen Bank Aval recommends you to follow the recommendations of the bank regarding security of card transactions – this will enable significant mitigation of the risks of possible fraud with your card.
