Crimean Council Presidium Initiating Referendum On Accretion Of Region's Powers (14:35, Thursday, February 27, 2014)

Ukrainian News Agency

Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea is asking deputies to initiate a pan-Crimean referendum on the question of perfection of the Autonomy's status and accretion of its powers, reads the presidium's address.

"Presidium of the Crimean Parliament thinks the only possible way out of the current situation is to apply the principle of direct people power. Are convinced that only holding of a pan-Crimean referendum... will allow Crimeans themselves, without external pressure and dictate, to determine the Autonomy's future," it said.

The document authors opine, peace and quiet in Crimea are laid down at stake as a result of unconstitutional seizure of power in Ukraine by radical nationalists with support of armed gangs.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Crimean Council is about to open a special session at 14:00.

Unknown gunmen have seized the buildings of the Crimean Supreme Council at Karla Marksa Street and of the Council of Ministers in Kirova Avenue in Simferopol.

A day off has been announced in Simferopol.

A response centre has been established to resolve the situation in Crimea.
