“Stirol” is one of the oldest enterprises of chemical branch not only in Ukraine, but also in former Soviet Union.
In 1929 within the bounds of five-year plan, the geological exploration and
plant engineering were begun. Nitrogen fertilizer plant (NFP), that was the name of concern “Stirol”, became the pioneer in former USSR to produce ammonia out of coke gas on the 23rd of April in 1933. The manufactory number 1 was built according to the project of foreign firms, the foreign eqiupment was used. In two years the plant gained the rated capacity, and by 1940 the production of ammonia grew five times, and the production of nitric acid – thirty times.
The ethylbenzene production and medical nitrous oxide production were set up for the first time at NFP in our country in postwar times. The sixties were the period of formation and development of organic chemistry. The turbid, bulk-polymerized and
expandable polystyrene production manufactories were put into operation. The new production of mineral fertilizers – manufactory number 3 “A”, which released granulated ammonium nitrate, began its activity in March, 1966.
On the 4th of May, 1966 Gorlovka nitrogen fertilizer plant was awarded Order of the Red Banner of Labour. In 1976 the plant was renamed into Industrial Association “Stirol”.
The end of the seventies and the beginning of the eighties became the period of the second birth of the plant: new large-tonnage plants of sulphuric acid, ammonia and urea production were put into use. The production of ammonia increased three times, and the production of fertilizers – two times.
In 1988 “Stirol” commenced the work, which was connected with the change of proprietary form. The corporatization was interrupted in 1991 in connection with fall of the Soviet Union. Lease concern “Stirol” was registered in February, 1993; it was a new period in enterprise production. Use of rent of purchase with rational spending allowed to direct resources to the development of manufacture and ransom of the Concern property. Joint-stock company “Concern Stirol” was registered on the 1st of September 1995, factory workers, veterans of the Concern, legal persons, citizens of Ukraine and the state itself became joint owners of the Concern ( there is no governmental interest in estate of the enterprise property since 1998 ).
The second aggregate of urea production started its work in July, 1994. The production of urea - ammonia mixture was put into operation in October, 1995, Joint Ukrainian-American enterprise “IBE - Stirol” was created. The opening of the
plant of modern pharmaceutical production in 1996 became the new direction in enterprise development; the production of pharmaceuticals was organized in accordance with the international standards GMP (the sertificate was obtained on the 28th of August 1998) and ISO 9002.
The Concern moved on to closed cycle technology completely on the 22nd of October, 2001, and since then there is no liter of effluents flow into rivers of Donbass out of “Stirol” territory. The Concern got the certificate, which confirmed the accordance of the terms of environmental management to the requirements of the intarnational standard ISO 14001 in 2002.
In autumn 2010 the Concern changed its owner – “Stirol” was included into group of assets of Dmitry Firtash, and at present it is a part of OSTCHEM holding company that unites PJSC “Azot” (Cherkassy), PJSC “Rivneazot” (Rivne) and Private JSC “Seveodonetsk Azot” (Severodenetsk).
