Ukraine History

More Than A Square

Though literally meaning “a square”, the Ukrainian word Maidan is a word undergoing evolution, or is that revolution? Since Ukraine’s independence movement in 1990, Kyiv’s Maidan Nezalezhnosti has been Ukraine’s epicentre for political rallies: the 1990 student Revolution on Granite, Ukraine without Kuchma in 2001, 2004’s Orange Revolution and now the ongoing EuroMaidan. Thus, Maidan has come to mean as much a rallying cry as it does a place to rally, and it is a term now known globally. What’s On looks at how a square has become synonymous with pushes for political change.

Time to Clip Some Wings

Berkut in English means golden eagle, and not unlike these birds of prey in the animal kingdom, Ukraine’s special police forces are equally versed in falconry. Having engaged in skulduggery of all sorts for more than 20 years, it may be time to clip some wings.

Documenting Life
Blockbusters exist for two reasons: To make us “oooh” and “aaahh” and to make money. Documentaries also exist for two reasons: because someone cared about something in our world and wanted to share it with others while enhancing our awareness of the subject matter. Documentaries are not typically money-spinners, yet when one of the greatest proponents of the “blockbuster” – Stephen Spielberg comes calling on a documentarian you can be assured they are making films worth seeing. Sochi’s Dark Side

The modern Olympic Games, a symbol of unity, peace and fair play, were resurrected from ancient times 120 years ago by Pierre de Coubertin. Much has changed in that time, and while the sport itself may still (mostly) adhere to de Coubertin’s ideals, behind the scenes it’s a very different story. Some pundits have labelled the Sochi Winter Olympic Games the biggest racket in Russian history. On the eve of the games What’s On looks at the reasons why and finds some of the excess sounds vaguely familiar.

Local Heroes

A Noble Profession

Teachers are taken for granted, despite doing important work. It can be a thankless job, there are many problems in Ukrainian public and private education, but teachers are not one of them. Amid cultural shifts, economic and social inequity, inadequate funding, poor policy, and bad parenting – the only thing that hasn’t changed is the dedication and skill of teachers. It’s a double act for this edition of local heroes with twins Olena and Kateryna Bozhenko, who were both inspired to shape young minds in the most challenging of circumstances.
