HISTORY






The Kharkov state academy of design and arts
is one of the oldest art educational institutions of Ukraine.



1768  


In 1768 the class of drawing was open in Kharkov collegium (the future university).
It became the first state art school in a province which began to work only in 11 years after opening the St.-Petersburg Academy of arts (1757).


1805  


In 1805 relay race of art education has passed to the Kharkov university.
The university and its founder V.Karazin have made the huge contribution to distribution of art knowledge in the south of Russian empire.


In 1869 in Kharkov, the school of drawing which was founded by madam M.Raevskaja-Ivanova has opened. This separate educational institution has selected
an art-industrial direction as Kharkov became the big industrial centre.
About 900 pupils have received art education at school for 27 years of its activity. Among them there were future well-known painters and architects (the academician of architecture O.Beketov, Ukrainian landscape writers S.Vasil'kivsky and M.Tkachenko, Russian artists K.Konchalovsky, O.Viezzhaev, K.Pervuhin).

1896  


In 1896 private school of madam M.Raevskaja-Ivanova was transformed into city art school in which pupils of the St.-Petersburg Academy of arts M.Pestrikov, M.Fedorov, K.Pineev taught.


In 1912 in Kharkov the art school subordinated to the St.-Petersburg Academy of arts has opened. O.Ljubimov who was recommended for this post by his teacher I.Repin, became the director of art school. O.Ljubimov has generated collective of teachers from pupils of well-known artists I.Repin and D.Kardoviskiy (O.Titov, S.Prohorov, G.Gorelov, O.Kokel, M.Fedorov).

1921  



In 1921 in Kharkov the higher art educational institution
(the Kharkov art institute) has opened.



In 1922-1925 sculptor B.Kratko was the rector of institute.
In 1925-1927 the known landscape writer M.Burachek was the rector of institute.
In 1927-1933 painter A.Komashko the pupil of I.Repin was the rector of institute.
In 1933-1941 critic I.Avgust was the rector of institute.
In 1921-1941 scientific professors (S.Taranushenko, D.Gordeev, L.Lenevich) were engaged in scientific activity in institute. Known artists (A.Petritsky, F.Krichevsky, G.Bondarenko, M.Samokish, V.Kasijan, V.Mironenko, B.Kosarev, M.Deregus, B.Blank, M.Fradkin, D.Ovcharenko, L.Kramarenko, M.Kozik)taught art disciplines. The plastic anatomy was taught by oustanding scientific academician V.Vorob'ev.


1941  



The institute was evacuated (1941) to Samarkand within the Second world war.


In 1943 the institute has renewed work in Kharkov. In post-war years national artists of Ukraine V.Agibalov, G.Tomenko, V.Sizikov, O.Hmel'nitsky, A.Konstantinopol'sky, and honored workers of arts of Ukraine professors E.Egorov, L.Chernov, O.Martinets, V.Lozovyj, E.Zherdzitsky, S.Solodovnikov, O.Vjatkin, I.Karas' have continued traditions of the Kharkov art school.
In 1943-1948 painter S.Besedin was the rector of institute.
In 1948-1972 M.Shaposhnikov was the rector of institute.


In 1963 the Kharkov state art institute was reorganized
in the Kharkov art-industrial institute.
The institute began preparation of artists of an industrial direction.
In 1972-1985 professor E.Egorov was the rector of institute.


In 1985-1998 professor V.Torkatjuk was the rector of institute.
In 1989 the postgraduate study in institute was open
In 1992 the art liceum with biennial term of study was open in institute.

2001  


In 2001 the Kharkov state academy of design and arts was created on the basis of the Kharkov art-industrial institute
(the order of the Cabinet of Ukraine N 364р.)




From 1999 the professor academician V.Danilenko is the rector of academy.

Today almost 1450 students (including from 10 foreign countries) study on 3 faculties of academy.
200 teachers carry out teaching and educational, methodical, scientific and creative work on 17 faculties of academy.
Among them there are 18 professors and 57 senior lecturers. 14 teachers have honorary titles. 4 teachers are members of Academy of arts of Ukraine and Academy of architecture and construction of Ukraine. Almost half of teachers are members of the National union of artists and the Union of designers of Ukraine.

The academy is the only thing on Ukraine a higher educational institution where students receive higher education in design of industrial products, in graphic design, in designing interiors, tapestry materials, clothes, firm style and packing, in commercial and industrial advertising.

Graduates fruitfully work at the enterprises and in establishments of many industries, in the design organizations, commercial and industrial firms and associations, the cultural and art organizations, special educational institutions.

Also the academy is the recognized centre of art culture.
Here students receive higher education in easel painting, easel graphics, books graphics, the poster, a monumental and decoration list and a stained-glass window, architectural-decorative plastic and a sculpture, restoration of works of art.
Pupils of the Kharkov art school are
3 National artists and
2 National architects of the USSR,
35 National artists of Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan,
50 Honored workers of art of Ukraine, Russia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Tatarstan,
10 Deserved artists of the countries of the CIS,
9 winners of the State premiums.
