Happy 20th Ukraine!
It may have a very long and interesting history, but ironically, this great country we live in is one of the youngest in the world. Later this month, Ukraine turns 20, and we here at What’s On would like to wish the country and every one in it, a very happy birthday. As part of this issue dedicated to this great celebration, we’re taking a look back at the last 20 years, noting the most important events in the country’s young life as it comes of age.

A Different Perspective
Depending on your perspective, twenty years may seem like a lot or a little amount of time. Trees grow to be thousands of years old, and so twenty years to a oak is nothing! On the other hand, a twenty-year old car is considered something of a relic. But what does twenty years mean in terms of a country? And depending on whether you were born here or arrived at the turn of independence, does your perspective change?

Going out French Wines and Good Food |
Tuesday, 27 February 2007
Some lucky people were present at the wonderful French Vernissage Café on Andriyivskiy Uzviz on Saturday 17 February to taste some excellent French wines from the Margaux area of Bordeaux. Hosted by Olivier Duffour, the owner of the Vinolioub wine shop (11 Kostiantinivska Vul), there were a number of superb red wines to sample along with some first class cuisine provided by Vernissage. Olivier is the first to import these excellent wines from this particular region of France into Ukraine, and they can be found exclusively at Vinolioub. Needless to say, those present had a wonderful time, and were all more than a little tipsy by the end of the afternoon! |

Editorial From THE EDITOR |
Tuesday, 27 February 2007
Just when you thought the Ukrainian parliament couldn’t get any more childish, the opposition surppassed themselves last week by actually turning the electricity off. Ukraine’s legislative body has long been the domain of schoolboy antics, whether we’re talking about fist fights, fickle friendships or the practice of physically blocking opponents from reaching the podium, but cutting the power represented a new nadir for what is surely Europe’s most infantile elected assembly. This sort of on-going nonsense is particularly hard to take given the efforts ordinary Ukrainians have made over the past couple of years to turn the country into a fully functioning European democracy, and it also serves to remind us all that democracy in itself does not solve anything, but is merely a tool that is as good or bad as those who wield it. If the country’s deputies remain determined to behave like school-age brats then the only solution would appear to be to treat them like errant children and introduce a series of punishments straight from the headmaster’s manual. Under such a system anyone caught bringing a megaphone into the debating chamber, trying to vote on behalf of their absent cronies, physically assaulting colleagues or attempting to kidnap the house speaker could be subjected to various bans and the loss of deputy privileges, or in extreme cases stripped of their precious immunity, leaving them to skulk around stamping their feet and screaming ‘it’s not fair!’ while mulling over the repercussions of their immaturity. The only problem here is the absence of anyone in the country with the authority to enforce such rulings, but if that could be overcome it would be a surefire way of maintaining the public’s flagging interest in the political process!
Cheers, Peter Dickinson Editor |

A Man of Many Words
Young, good-looking and successful. But enough about me – let’s talk about Andriy Danilevych. At the tender age of 30, this baby-faced assassin is an editor at TRK Ukraina. He hosts political debates and interviews VIPs, up to and including presidents. He’s just finished for the summer, and What’s On caught up with him before he jetted off to New York.
