11 July - World Population Day
11 July 2008. New-York – Kyiv - Since 1989 the World Population Day is observed annually on the 11th of July worldwide. Today UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed the world leaders and called them to intensify efforts in reducing maternal mortality and improving the health and quality of life for all people.

UN Global Compact Network in Ukraine conducted a Clean Up weekend at the Trukhaniv Island in Kyiv
6 July, 2008. Kyiv, Ukraine - On Sunday, 6 July the UN in Ukraine and the UN Global
Compact Network in Ukraine initiated and conducted the first practical
corporate event within the framework of the National Go Green Campaign
– Clean Up Dnipro Day at the Trukhaniv Island in Kyiv. The event
gathered over 60 participants, who came to clean up the recreational
zone of Matveevska Zatoka from the garbage, in spite of the rain and
bad weather conditions.

United Nations in Ukraine launches the National GO GREEN Campaign on climate change supported by Ukrainian business leaders
3 July, 2008. Kyiv, Ukraine. The National Go Green Campaign initiated by the United Nations Office in Ukraine under the auspices of Global Compact Network was launched today in Kyiv at the central National Botanic garden. The Campaign being voluntary initiative aims to reinforce the role of the environmental protection within the context of the country’s economic and social development. The event brought together more than 60 participants, including the senior management of the leading Ukrainian and multinational companies, civil society leaders and media.

Progress in drug control is under threat, warns new UN drug agency report
26 June 2008, Vienna – The World Drug Report 2008, launched today by the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Antonio Maria Costa, shows that the recent stabilization in the world drugs market is under threat. A surge in opium and coca cultivation and the risk of higher drug use in developing countries threaten to undermine recent progress in drug control.

UN Secretary-General Message for World Refugee Day

political breakdown and war have long, pernicious histories. Yet the fragility of political systems, the devolution
of societies into catastrophic violence have also provoked a humane reply, the
protection of those forced to flee their countries in escape from persecution. Granting asylum can be traced back thousands
of years and is one of the earliest hallmarks of civilization. Today, the principle is firmly recognized in
Article 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which this year marks
its 60th anniversary: “Everyone
has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.”

Anyone can save a life: UN family members donate blood in Ukraine
12 June, 2008. Kyiv, Ukraine - Millions of people owe their lives to people they will never meet – people who donate their blood freely and without any reward. Just 400 ml. of donated blood can help save as many as three people’s lives. Today the UN Country Team in Ukraine has conducted UN Blood Drive on the eve of the World Blood Donor Day commemorated annually worldwide on June 14. To promote unpaid blood donation and to support the global movement encouraging regular blood donations, UN staff members decided to donate their blood in the Kyiv city hospital.

observing the rights of people with disabilities (PWD) in Ukraine. During this session the practical manual for parliamentarians “From exclusion to equality: ensuring rights of people with disabilities” was presented to over 300
MPs, government officials, human rights experts, journalists and people
with disabilities. The Ukrainian version of this publication
was produced by the UN office in Ukraine in cooperation with the
National Assembly of People with Disabilities.

UN General Assembly convenes high-level meeting on AIDS
10 June, 2008. Kyiv - New-York. The General Assembly 2008 High-level Meeting on AIDS is taking place at the United Nations headquarters in New York on 10 - 11 June. It will review progress made in implementing the 2001 Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS and the 2006 Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS. Ukraine will be represented by Minister of Health Vasyl Knyazevych.

In Ukraine the winners of the national photography contest “Addressing Climate Change – Caring About Our Planet” get awards on the World Environment Day
5 June 2008. Kyiv, Ukraine. Today, on the World Environment Day, the opening of the exhibition and awarding ceremony of the national photography contest “Addressing Climate Change – Caring About Our Planet” take place in Kyiv. Over 980 Ukrainians submitted their photos taken in 45 countries all over the world to the photocontest that is conducted for the first time in Ukraine by the United Nations office in partnership with the Ministry of Environmental Protection and with support of the Olympus company.
