Heorhy Mayboroda (1913-1992) is not a name audiences in the West will be familiar with. His compositional style (at least on the evidence of Mylana) is conservative to the extent that it must be called anachronistic. There are few passages here that would sound out of place in a Rimsky opera, for instance - the tonal and harmonic language is romantic through and through. Still, how could that be used as a criticism when Mayboroda does it so well? Mylana is a hugely enjoyable, thoroughly attractive opera, with lots of orchestral color, memorable themes, rousing choral scenes and real dramatic impact, and is strongly recommended to anyone with an interest in romantic opera - I count it as one of the most enjoyable discoveries I have made in quite a while.

One major drawback is, of course, the lack of documentation accompanying this release. No libretto, not even a synopsis, no information on the composer or the work, or even the performers. You'll just have to live with that. It is hence somewhat hard to follow the story (fortunately the sheer resourcefulness of Mayboroda's writing will keep the listener engaged all the same).

On a more positive note, the performances are excellent. To be honest I was a little wary when purchasing this release - I was unfamiliar with the composer, had never heard of most of the performers, was unfamiliar with the label, and only really knew that it was a recording from the seventies. No need to worry about any of that. The performances are uniformly good, often excellent, both from singers, orchestra and chorus (this is a first-rate, well-prepared performance). The sound is really good as well, and certainly much better than one could have feared. It is clear, warm and well-balanced - you won't mistake it for a contemporary studio recording, true, but it is absolutely no obstacle.

In short, and despite the absence of a libretto, I'll give this one a hearty recommendation, and I sincerely hope that more music by this composer will be made available (Melodiya recorded at least some back in the day).

I can't really put into words what the music of Fleeting Melodies means to me. I got in touch with it about a year ago and all the music I compose is now under the influence of it. The smooth quality of it, the slightest touch of such beauty and the ability to achieve it is of such rarity that this is something to treasure. It's one of those moments that you have to quiet yourself and pay attention just because there's so much into these humble sounds, these fragile and beauty structures, that anything you'll do is enough to disrupt them. You need a lot of respect for music to listen to these pieces and that's what I'd recommend to someone who doesn't know Silvestrov's music. Just let it breathe and surround you.

I was the happy buyer of the last copy available. It was a gift (I know, I know, how could I not keep it...), but I know it will be very well kept.

Потрясающая книга!!! Несмотря на солидный объем, большое количество ярких и пространных описаний, читается легко, оторваться не могла . Потрясает богатство и красота языка, интересно выписанные герои. Произведение очень многомерное, касающееся болевых точек нашей истории и нашей жизни.
Думаю, это выдающийся роман, который когда-нибудь обязательно войдет в школьную программу.

Да, ребята!!! Диск просто замечательный! Музыка живая, песни все позивные!!! Голос Джамалы - это музыкальный инструмент, который в мелодии главный, от прослушивания которого не хочется отрываться ни на секунду. Эта певица уникальна и тем, что она любой стиль музыки может превратить в джазовое исполнение, живое и настоящее... Не зря классика и джаз считаются той музыкой, которая обогащает интеллект, заставляет радоваться жизни и почувствовать вкус жизни уже в самом существовании.

Слушая Джамалу ты понимаешь, что ЖИЗНЬ ПРЕКРАСНА!!! Музыка и слова несут в себе радость и счастье) Очень позитивный альбом, слушаю каждый день и не могу оторваться) Спасибо, Джамала!!!

Диск Квитки подарили друзья из Киева. Потрясающе!!! Найдите диск Квитки с песней "Журавли" - "Чуєш, брате мій". Я всегда плачу, слушая её. Низкий поклон её родителям, которые так проникновенно влюбили её в украинский язык. Её голос совершенен!!!

Достойне видання віршів Великої Поетеси, прекрасно оформлене і з любов’ю складане! Надзвичайно цікаво було читати вступне слово Оксани Пахльовської з її особистими спогадами при маму і враженнями від її поезії. А CD з голосом самої Ліни Костенко – це взагалі щось неймовірне! Дуже раджу всім мати цю книгу у своїй бібліотеці!!!

How do I love ShockolaD... let me count the ways! I am a huge fan of the group's first CD, namber van (words look like Hambep Bah), which is ethno-jazz with haunting vocals that add exotic appeal. It remains my favorite. The second, Pokosy, features more of a rock/pop influence and creates a more upbeat mood. The vocals are stronger still, and gorgeous.

Now comes this CD, which includes the elements described above, but to my ears has more of a folk influence mixed in. Perhaps this is because the music is in part a revival and reinvention of traditional Ukrainian folk and holiday music. But to my western ears, this is not holiday music (except one track, Tykha Nich; a beautiful interpretation of Silent Night). Rather, this is yet another innovative realization of this remarkably creative and talented band's rich ethno-jazz sound.

I hesitate to single out one thing or another that I admire more on this CD. The vocals are again outstanding - I play Do Seho Domu over and over just to hear Dana & Ivanka(?) sing that intricate chorus together. Anastasija has a magical touch on the keyboards throughout, beautifully accompanied by bass guitar or double bass. Also check out the flojara (like a flute) on Brynila, along with the great sax on this and so many other tracks. Listen to the drums - they're often subtle, but there's so much going on there! I would try to be more specific about all this, but unfortunately the liner notes are only in Ukrainian and you'll have to hear it for yourself anyway.

ShockolaD has been my favorite band since I first heard them in 2009. This new CD, as with the others before, is a treasure to me.
