SMS Weather for Kiev Ukraine and Cities Around the Globe
The “Mobile Weather” project was started back in 2001 when I was musing on ways of enriching my then simplest mobile phone with anything at all beyond voice function.
This post is just a renovation of the page originally written sometime in 2004 to answer most common question about SMS Weather Report formatting. The original page follows.
This is one of the cities’ 5-day Weather Reports sent out on 10/22/06
by Top Cat to cell phones of the subscribed customers.

How to read reports
As a rule, report consists of the following lines:
- City name, time of current conditions snapshot (local time)
- Current conditions, temperature in Celsius degrees, humidity. “Temperature” has two parts: (1) actual temperature, (2) how much “Feels like” temp. differs from the actual temperature
- Wind direction and speed at the time of report
- Day’s verges (sunrise-sunset, 12 h time format, no am/pm signs)
- Weather forecast for today (conditions, high temp/low temp)
- Weather forecast for tomorrow
- Next 3 lines are Weather forecast for the last 3 days of the 5-day period reported
Notes.
- Some lines may be missing from a report due to partial data unavailability.
- Many operators (like “Kyivstar GSM” in Ukraine) do not
transmit newline characters in SMS, instead they substitute plain space
chars for them. This makes reports slightly less readable and yet even more
displeasing – messes up the lines description given above.
Major abbreviations found in reports are as follows:
Abbr. | Meaning |
p/ | partly/ |
t/storms | Thunderstorms |
scat. | scattered |
clo | Cloudy |
isol. | Isolated |
M/ | Mostly |
Earl | early |
SnShwrs | Snow Showers |
