Ukrainian Cost of the Soviet Victory
 Since 1965,  9 May has been officially celebrated as the “Victory Holiday of the Soviet Peoples in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945”. Since then, Ukraine has marked 9 May as a state holiday, accompanied by splendid military parades and other events, like a day off, with a festive concert and fireworks at night.

Blonde Ukrainian Angel at Eurovision
Mika Newton, a sweet blonde with an amazingly strong voice, will be representing Ukraine at this year’s Eurovision International Song Contest taking place in Düsseldorf on 12-14 May. Her song Angel will shake the whole of Europe on 12 May, with the Ukrainian performing in the sixth slot of the second semi-final, as determined by the draw. During her frenetic schedule of rehearsals, promo-touring and other preparations, What’s On managed to catch up with Mika on the sofa, to chat a little and wish her the best of good luck at Eurovision 2011.

For those not familiar with the wonderful intricacies of golf, the Ryder Cup is a golf trophy contested biannual between teams representing the USA and Europe. Beginning in 127, the tournament was originally a solely British American affair, but after 45 years of US dominance it was extended to Britain and Ireland in 1973, followed by the rest of Europe in 1979.

It isn’t only the local DJ scene where girls are proving that they are on top.  On 24 September Yashik, the new venue from Eric Aigner, will play host to ‘Passion’, a sexy classical music group consisting of four delectable young ladies. Pieces by Argentinean and Spanish composers are the ladies forte, though the musicians also do a sterling covers of contemporary hits and movie soundtracks.

Nobody could work a crowd like the late great Freddie Mercury and this loving tribute to the Queen frontman successfully recreates both his charisma and versatile musical talent. The first part of the show sees a reprise of Barcelona, the innovative production which saw opera and pop fused successfully together for the first time by Freddie and Montserrat Caballe, with fresh-faced Robin van Beek and Karin ten Cate ably filling the considerably sized shoes of the two icons.

Land Reform in Ukraine: Over Before It Begins?

In March, the Verkhovna Rada refused to extend the existing moratorium on the purchase and sale of agricultural land. For the first time in the history of independent Ukraine, agricultural land can be bought and sold, and that raises a lot of concerns, chief among them “who will end up owning the land (and we all pretty much know the answer to that)? Once they end up owning it, what will happen to it? And what will the future hold for those smallholders who currently own it and are forced to sell due to poverty and harsh economic conditions? What’s On wanted to get to the root of this debate (pun intended), but one first has to understand the current situation and where it could lead. Back to the Motherland we went.
