About us

Ukrainian Social Investment Fund is a non-profit organization created to support socially vulnerable groups of population and initiatives of local communities and NGOs (Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Decree #740 of April 28, 2000).

The similar funds work in numerous countries of the world. The first Social Investment Fund was created in early 80s of the 20th century in Bolivia. Nowadays such funds work in more than 60 countries.

The idea of Ukrainian Social Investment Fund creation was occurred in 1998. Specialists of Ministries of Labor, Economy, Justice, the Administration of the President of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine jointly with the World Bank experts have been elaborated the concept of USIF activity.

At that time it was decided that the Fund’s priority shall be a support of community and vulnerable groups of population social problems solution and encouragement of local initiatives in poverty reduction and prevention of social isolation.

The Fund’s activity started in 2000 by implementation of pilot phase of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the World Bank “Social Investment Fund” joint project which was the first large project in social care services field in Ukraine. This project successfully completed in 2008.

In general USIF has being implemented five large projects and within them more than 1000 microrpojects were realized at local community level. These microprojects were aimed at renovation or improvement of basic social services and creation of innovation social care services for vulnerable groups of population. Besides a lot of training and consultative events, conferences and seminars aimed at local community and authorities’ capacity building were conducted.

According to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Decree #740 of April 28, 2000 USIF can be financed by donors, accept charitable contributions and funds from other sources which are not prohibited by the Ukrainian legislation.

USIF projects in different years were financed by the World Bank, UK Government (DFID), Government of Sweden (SIDA), Government of Japan (JSDF), Government of Germany (KfW), Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), International Renaissance Foundation (IRF), United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
