Not that long ago, the good people of Kyiv became even more blessed, as a number of very interesting figures had found their way onto various corners of the city streets: Lanterns in Love on Maidan, Chairs Resting in Passage, and the Gigantic Match on Artema, just to name a few. We knew little of who created them or how they got there, and so deciding to do a little investigating, we stumbled upon a guy by the name of Volodymyr Belokon – the man behind the mayhem.

In this age of child beauty contests and photo-shop the candied photo of youngsters encrusted in mud or with chocolate smeared across their face is under threat, at least in Ukraine’s public sphere. Artists Vlad and Victoria Murashko are doing their bit to preserve the innocence of childhood however, displaying an array of photos from family albums featuring youngsters sporting faces that only a mother could love. Survivors of the Holodomor will gather at Kyiv’s out-of-town open air museum to remember those who were killed during the genocide. The exact number of citizens murdered during Stalin’s forced collectivisation programme of 1932-33 is still a matter of debate, with eight million believed to be a conservative estimate.
