Local elections in Ukraine will be fair and democratic, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov told reporters on Saturday, according to UKRINFORM.
"The president and the government made a number of steps and adopted several decisions, which in the country are perceived positively, and they will help ensure that the elections were absolutely fair, democratic and without any irregularities during the election campaign," the premier stressed.
He recalled that he had instructed the head of the State Tax Administration and chiefs of other regulatory bodies to take personal control over the fulfillment of the decision of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on ensuring the unhampered activity of mass media during the election campaign 2010, which implies a ban to inspect the media during the campaign. In addition, the government has invited international observers to monitor the local elections. "The government is interested in holding fair and transparent elections. And such elections will be held in Ukraine," Azarov stressed.
The head of government noted that he had ordered Justice Minister Oleksandr Lavrynovych to urgently check the cases of refusal of registration for local cells of political parties. "I would like the opposition to provide specific facts, in what region and at what voting station they are not registered, but not to be engaged in political populism," the prime minister emphasized. He advised representatives of the opposition, if they have specific facts of refusal to register, going to court and resolving all issues here.
According to Azarov, all statements of the opposition about undemocratic electoral process are due to the fact that the opposition already realizes its defeat in this election. "The opposition understands that they have lost these elections. After those years of chaos, which they staged in the country, it cannot be otherwise," he underscored.
