Average wage in Ukraine 5.5% up in 2009

The average wage in Ukraine in 2009 grew by 5.5% compared to 2008, to UAH 1,906, according to the State Statistics Committee.

The committee said that nominal average wage in December 2009 grew by 11.6% from December 2008 and by 14.2% from November 2009, to UAH 2,233.

Actual wage in Ukraine in December 2009 fell by 0.9% from December 2008, while in December 2008 it fell by 3% from December 2007.

The highest level of earnings in December 2009 was registered in Kyiv, where the average wage was UAH 3,684, in Donetsk region (UAH 2,436), Sevastopol (UAH 2,328), in Kyiv region (UAH 2,322), and Odesa region (UAH 2,317), while the lowest average wages are in Chernihiv (UAH 1,636), Volyn (UAH 1,654) and Ternopil regions (UAH 1,695).

The committee said in 2009 the wage grew in the agriculture sector (12.1%), industry (5%), the sphere of communal and personal services (18%), health care (11%), real estate sector (7%), transport and communications sector (9.1%), financial activity (7.8%), and education (11.3%). At the same time, the level of wages fell in construction (17.5%) and in the state management sphere (2.6%).

Total wage arrears in Ukraine by March 1 rose by 38.2% compared to January 1 and by 7% compared to February 1, 2009, to UAH 1.643 billion.

Total wage debts in Ukraine as of January 1, 2010 grew by 23.1% year-over-year, and fell by 10.2% in December, to UAH 1.473 billion. The wage debt is 6.2% of the wage fund for December 2009.

As of January 1, 2010, the share of employees who did not receive wage was 3.2% of total employees, which is 14.5% down as of December 1, 2009. The average debt per employee is UAH 2,476, which is 10.9% more than the average wage in December 2009.

The committee also said that last month the number of employees that went on forced leave grew by 15.4% compared to November 2009, and the number of employees working for shorter hours went up by 7.9%.
